Workshop Overview and Purpose
The purpose of this workshop is to expand and enhance nursing knowledge, skills and competencies of the professional nurse regarding the systematic evaluation of physical assessment with an emphasis on interpretation of identified findings, both normal and abnormal. Participants will practice assessment skills in each session of the workshop, and will complete an integrated assessment at the end of the workshop. Completion of this workshop and the integrated assessment will fulfill the requirements of the pre-assessment check-off required in TWU'S graduate nursing course N5644 Advanced Physical Assessment and Differential Diagnosis (TWU Dallas Center only).

Workshop Objectives

  • Demonstrate correct physical examination technique in the adult patient using a systematic approach.
  • Interpret normal and common abnormal physical examination findings in the adult patient.

Location, Times and Schedule
The workshop will be offered from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. on August 15 & 16, and 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on August 17 in room 3620 of the T. Boone Pickens Institute of Health Sciences - Dallas Center.

What You Will Need for the Workshop
You will need to bring your own stethoscope and purchase the required textbook. All other equipment will be furnished.

Required Book: Bickley, L.S. (2009). Bate's Pocket Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking, (6th ed.). Philadelphia, PA: Wolters Kluwer/ Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. ISBN-13: 978-0-7817-8066-7 or ISBN-10: 0-7817-8066-7. (This pocket guide is a required book in N5644.)

Continuing Nursing Education Credit
Texas Woman’s University-Lifelong Learning Continuing Nursing Education is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. 20 contact hours will be awarded for completion of the program. Criteria for successful completion includes attendance for the entire program, signing an attendance sheet each day, and submission of completed evaluation forms for each day.
