About the High Acuity Course

The High Acuity Competencies course focuses on nursing care and collaborative management of the critically ill patient in the intensive care unit (ICU). Through a combination of classroom lectures encompassing evidence based best practices along with High Fidelity Human Patient Simulation experiences, participants will be more advanced as a nurse in their ability for:

  • Application to clarify a patient care problem or situation and use appropriate principles and procedures to solve a specific problem;

  • Evaluation to analyze and qualify information to make judgments;

  • Synthesis to hypothesize and resolve complex problems regarding the nursing care for critically ill patients in the intensive care unit.

You will experience making complex nursing judgments involving the following simulations:

  • Basic Dysrhythmias Simulation
  • Acute Coronary Syndrome and Acute Myocardial Infarction Simulation
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, COPD Simulation
  • Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Simulation
  • Brain Attack Simulation
  • Herniation Syndrome Simulation
  • Gastrointestinal Bleeding Simulation
  • Acute and Chronic Renal Failure
  • Minimal Expected Behavioral Simulation Final

The simulation practice will result in you becoming more advanced as a nurse in your ability to problem solve, critically think, and care for the patient in the intensive care unit.

Some of the Course Objectives

Upon completion of the High Acuity Competencies course, the participant will be able to:

  • Conceptualize treatment modalities for specific patients in the ICU.
  • Collaborate with other members of the health care team in managing the critically ill patient.
  • Apply current evidence-based best practices research in caring for critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU).
  • Demonstrate through the patient simulation experiences, confidence in making appropriate nursing care decisions.
  • Assimilate ethical and legal issues which impact patients in the ICU.
  • Evaluate assessment findings (patient signs & symptoms, diagnostic tests) of specific patients in the ICU.

General Information

Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Credits
Texas Woman’s University will award CNE credits to participants who completes the High Acuity course. Texas Woman’s University Lifelong Learning Continuing Nursing Education is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. No conflict of interest has been disclosed.
