SIX PIONEERS EARN NORTH ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS
Barberee named North Division Coach-of-the-Year

RICHARDSON, TX—The Lone Star Conference announced the 2003 Volleyball LSC North Division All-Conference awards and six Texas Woman’s University student-athletes were honored. Senior Marci Brinkman (Carrollton, TX/Newman Smith HS) and junior Jenny Madrid (Panama City, Panama/Hill College) were named to the North Division First Team while senior Heather Smith (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala HS) was selected to the Second Team. Junior’s Courtney Lewis (San Antonio, TX/ Panola College) and Paz Diaz (Truth or Consequences, NM/N.M. Military Institute) and sophomore Carley Messmer (Garland, TX/UT-San Antonio) were all tabbed Honorable Mention All-Conference. The six honorees are the most by any school in the All-Conference list.

Head coach Shelly Barberee, who just finished her first year at Texas Woman’s University, was named the LSC North Division Coach-of-the-Year. She led the Pioneers to a 16-18 overall record, a share of the North Division title with an 8-2 record and a birth in the conference tournament for the first time since 1997. Barberee helped lead TWU to a 12-match win streak in the month of October and finished the season by winning 14 of their last 18, giving the Pioneers their highest win total since they went 24-13 in 1997.

Madrid led the team in kills on the year with 387 and finished second on the team with 37 service aces and 99 total blocks. She turned in a season-high 22 kills vs. Central Oklahoma on Oct. 18. Brinkman totaled 336 kills and led the team with 117 total blocks and 39 service aces. She recorded five double-double performances and finished with a season-high 18 kills vs. Incarnate Word on Sept. 19. Smith finished second with a career-high 347 kills and also chipped in with 200 digs, 46 blocks and 28 aces. She also had five double-doubles in kills and digs and turned in a season-high 21 kills vs. Central Oklahoma on Oct. 18. Messmer recorded a team-leading 1,023 assists and added 294 digs, 23 aces and 108 setter-kills. She recorded a triple double vs. Fort Lewis on Sept. 5 with 13 kills, 30 assists and 11 digs and also turned in a career-high 61 assists vs. Central Oklahoma on Oct. 18. Diaz played 126 games at libero and led the team with 465 digs, good enough to place her fifth in the conference. She turned in a season-high 30 digs vs. Fort Lewis on Sept. 5. Lewis stepped up into the starting lineup after the first quarter of the season and finished 2003 with 237 kills and 344 digs. She totaled a team-leading 12 double-doubles and recorded a season-high 16 kills vs. Texas A&M-Kingsville on Oct. 11.
