MESSMER AND MADRID TAKE WEEKLY CONFERENCE HONORS

DENTON, TX—Texas Woman’s University volleyball players Carley Messmer (Garland, TX/UT-San Antonio) and Jenny Madrid (Panama City, Panama/Hill College) have been named Lone Star Conference North Division Players-of-the-Week for the week of Oct. 14-Oct. 20, 2003. This is Messmer’s second straight Setter-of-the-Week honor and it marks the first time since Nov. 3-9, 1997 that two Pioneers have won hitter and setter-of-the-week honors in the same week.

Madrid is this week’s North Division Offensive Player-of-the-Week after exploding for 4.5 kills per game to lead the Pioneers to three more victories. She hit at a .364 clip and totaled 54 kills, including a season-high 22 in a five-game win over Central Oklahoma. She added 13 total blocks and 19 digs as TWU improved to 5-0 in LSC play. Messmer earned the honor for a second straight week after pacing the Pioneers to wins over Dallas Baptist, Cameron and Central Oklahoma. She averaged 13.5 assists per game, her highest weekly average of the year, and recorded a career-high 61 assists and 25 digs versus UCO. She totaled 162 assists, 43 digs and nine kills for the week. TWU now has an overall record of 11-15 and sits atop the Lone Star Conference North Division with a 5-0 record.

The Pioneer volleyball team plays two conference rivals on Thursday and Saturday as they try to remain unbeaten in LSC North Division action. Southeastern Oklahoma State is the opponent on Oct. 23 in Kitty Magee Arena at 7 p.m. while Texas A&M-Commerce comes to town on Oct. 25 with the match starting at 2 p.m.
