MESSMER NAMED LONE STAR CONFERENCE
SETTER-OF-THE-WEEK

DENTON, Texas—Texas Woman’s University volleyball player Carley Messmer (Garland, TX/UT-San Antonio) has been named Lone Star Conference North Division Setter-of-the-Week for the week of Oct. 7-Oct. 13, 2003 because of her play in TWU’s three matches this past week. Messmer averaged 10.81 assists per game (119 total) while also adding 19 digs and 11 kills in the Pioneers’ three victories over Midwestern State, Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Kingsville. She tied a season-high of 58 assists in TWU’s win over TAMU-K on Saturday, Oct. 11.

TWU now has an overall record of 7-15, but sits atop the Lone Star Conference North Division in a two-way tie with Cameron with a 3-0 record. Messmer leads the team with 636 assists in 2003 and is second with 179 digs. She also has 79 setter kills in 76 games played.

The Pioneer volleyball team is on the road tonight as they face Dallas Baptist starting at 7 p.m. TWU returns home this Thursday and Saturday to host two conference matches against Cameron and Central Oklahoma. On Oct. 16, the Pioneers host Cameron at 7:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena in a match between the top two teams in the LSC North Division. Then on Oct. 18, they host Central Oklahoma at 2 p.m. The Lady Bronchos are currently second in the North Division with a 2-1 record.

Messmer’s Setter-of-the-Week award gives TWU three Player-of-the-Week awards for the season. Paz Diaz (Truth or Consequences, NM/N.M. Military Institute) earned Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors on Sept. 22 while Heather Smith (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala HS) earned Offensive Player-of-the-Week honors on Oct. 6.
