NAMED LONE STAR CONFERENCE
SETTER-OF-THE-WEEK
DENTON,
Texas—Texas Woman’s
University volleyball player Carley
Messmer (Garland, TX/UT-San Antonio) has been
named Lone Star Conference North Division Setter-of-the-Week
for the week of Oct. 7-Oct. 13, 2003 because of her
play in TWU’s three matches this past week.
Messmer averaged 10.81 assists per game (119 total)
while also adding 19 digs and 11 kills in the Pioneers’ three
victories over Midwestern State, Tarleton State and
Texas A&M-Kingsville. She tied a season-high
of 58 assists in TWU’s win over TAMU-K on Saturday,
Oct. 11.
TWU
now has an overall record of 7-15, but sits atop the
Lone Star Conference North Division in a two-way tie
with Cameron with a 3-0 record. Messmer
leads the team with 636 assists in 2003 and is second with 179 digs. She
also has 79 setter kills in 76 games played.
The
Pioneer volleyball team is on the road tonight as they
face Dallas Baptist starting at 7 p.m.
TWU returns home this Thursday and Saturday
to host two conference matches against Cameron and Central Oklahoma. On
Oct. 16, the Pioneers host Cameron at 7:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena in
a match between the top two teams in the LSC North Division. Then on Oct.
18, they host Central Oklahoma at 2 p.m. The Lady Bronchos are currently
second in the North Division with a 2-1 record.
Messmer’s
Setter-of-the-Week award gives TWU three Player-of-the-Week
awards for the season. Paz Diaz (Truth or Consequences, NM/N.M. Military
Institute) earned Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors on Sept. 22
while Heather Smith (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala HS) earned
Offensive Player-of-the-Week honors on Oct. 6.
