PIONEER
VOLLEYBALL DROPS DALLAS BAPTIST IN FOUR GAMES
DALLAS, TX—Texas Woman’s
University (8-15) struggled in the first game, hitting
a negative .027, but rebounded with 55 kills in the
final three to beat Dallas Baptist 3-1
(22-30, 30-28, 30-19, 30-25). Three Pioneers recorded
double digits in kills with Jenny Madrid
(Panama City/Hill College) chipping
in with a season-high 19.
"The team went on the court cold. Dallas Baptist was hitting the gaps in
our defense well and they took game one. Our passing was off, which made out
sets off and made it difficult for our hitters to finish," head coach Shelly
Barberee said. "They finally woke up midway through the match and started
playing better and we got away with another victory. Jenny Madrid had an outstanding
game on the offensive side and our blocking got better as the match went on."
DBU
was on fire in the first frame, recording 13 kills
and an attack percentage of .281, while the Pioneers
struggled with 10 kills and 11 errors. The
Patriots took game one 22-30 thanks to some good placement by Jill Raines,
who finished with a match-high 21 kills. Game two was very close with
both teams recording identical hitting percentages of .167. DBU had the
advantage in kills, 17 to 16, but the Pioneers evened the match up at
1-1 with a 30-28 win. TWU controlled the final two games with some of
their best hitting of the night, recording 21 kills at a .432 clip in
game three and 18 kills at a .273 clip in game four to walk away with
their sixth straight win, 30-19 and 30-25.
TWU
finished the match with 65 kills and 30 errors on 166
swings for a .211 attack percentage. Courtney
Lewis (San Antonio, TX/Panola College) recorded
her second double-double in a row with 11 kills and 12 digs while Marci
Brinkman (Carrollton, TX/Newman Smith H.S.) chipped in with
14 kills and eight digs. Carley Messmer (Garland, TX/UT-San
Antonio) finished with a match-high 54 assists while Paz
Diaz (Truth or Consequences, NM/N.M. Military Institute) totaled
a team-high 15 digs.
