PIONEERS EXTEND WIN STREAK TO THREE MATCHES

WICHITA FALLS, TX—Texas Woman’s University (5-15, 3-0 LSC) and conference rival Midwestern State (11-12, 1-2 LSC) played fairly even in their volleyball match with the Pioneers hitting slightly higher with a .169 compared to the Lady Indians .136. The difference in the match came down to service aces and errors as TWU rolled to a 3-0 (30-26, 30-24, 30-26) victory on the strength of 12 aces and six less hitting errors.

"We didn’t play are best match tonight, but we played good enough to win. The team was not hitting or receiving very well, but our serving kept us in the match," head coach Shelly Barberee said. "We have a rotation in place right now that the team has confidence in and it is paying off with victories. The team played hard throughout the match and never let Midwestern State take the lead. Jenny Madrid stepped up and played a great match, finishing with 12 kills."

Game one proved to be the closest of the match as the scored was tied 12 times and the lead changed hands four times before TWU was able to take control and win 30-26 with 17 kills on 51 swings. The Pioneers took control of the match in game two, as they never trailed with the help of a match-high .209 hitting percentage, winning the second frame 30-24. Midwestern State committed 13 hitting errors, compared to TWU’s three, en route to a 30-26 loss in game three, handing the win to the Pioneers.

TWU finished with 44 kills and 21 errors on 136 swings for a .169 attack percentage. Jenny Madrid (Panama City, Panama/Hill College) led the Pioneers with 12 kills while Paz Diaz (Truth or Consequences, NM/N.M. Military Institute) finished with a team-high 15 digs. Midwestern State had two players in double figures in kills with Joni Martin leading the way with 12, but 12 return errors and 27 hitting errors proved to be the team’s undoing.

Up next, the Pioneers continue their road trip as they to Tarleton State for a 7 p.m. match on Thursday, Oct. 9. TWU returns home for the first time since Aug. 30 to face Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday, Oct. 11. The match will begin at 2 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
