PIONEERS
MOVE TO 2-0 IN CONFERENCE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1997
DURANT,
OK—Texas Woman’s University
(4-15, 2-0 LSC) used a season-high attack percentage
of .304 to hand Southeastern Oklahoma
(1-20, 0-2 LSC) a 3-0 (30-20, 30-24, 30-15) loss in Lone
Star Conference North Division action. The win, which is
TWU’s second over the Lady Savages this season, marks
the first time since 1997 that the Pioneers have opened
conference play with a 2-0 record. That year, TWU went
undefeated in conference and won the LSC North Division
title.
"Our offense played better tonight than they have all season. The hitters
were making kills from the start and they never let up. We also did a good job
of serving, which helped in the win," head coach Shelly Barberee said. "I
told the team before we started tonight to not go into this match over confident
because we had already beaten Southeastern earlier this season and they didn’t.
The team communicated well on the court and played hard throughout the match."
TWU
controlled the match with their offense from the beginning.
The Pioneers hit .179 with 11 kills and six errors in game
one while SOSU turned in
a negative .054 hitting percentage with 11 kills and 13 errors. Game one
was tied 11-11 when TWU went on a 11-3 run to take control, strolling to
a 30-20 win. In game two, both teams exchanged the lead 14 times before
the Pioneers went on a 10-4 run with the score knotted at 20-20 to win
the game and take a 2-0 lead in the match. Jenny Madrid (Panama
City, Panama/Hill College) led TWU with seven kills in the second
frame. The Lady Savages self-destructed in the final game as they hit a
negative .029 with six kills and seven errors while the Pioneers hit .400
with 15 kills and three errors. TWU built an early 10-2 lead in game three
and never looked back, winning the game 30-15, and taking their second
match of the season over SOSU.
The
Pioneers finished the match with 45 kills, compared to SOSU’s
29, and 14 errors on 102 swings for a .304 attack percentage.
Two players finished
in double digits in kills for TWU with Madrid leading the way with 13 while Heather
Smith (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala H.S.) turned in 11. Carley
Messmer (Garland, TX/South Garland H.S.) finished with a team-high
22 assists and nine digs.
Up
next, the Pioneers travel to Midwestern State on Tuesday,
Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. Then on Thursday, Oct. 9, they
head to Tarleton State for a 7 p.m. match.
The Pioneers return home for the first time since Aug. 30 to face Texas
A&M-Kingsville on Saturday, Oct. 11. The match will begin at 2 p.m.
in Kitty Magee Arena.
