PIONEERS OPEN UP CONFERENCE WITH WIN OVER TEXAS A&M-COMMERCE

COMMERCE, TX—Texas Woman’s University (3-15, 1-0 LSC) dropped the first game of their match against Texas A&M-Commerce (11-9, 0-1 LSC), but that was the only daylight that the Lady Lions saw as the Pioneers walked away with a decisive 3-1 (26-30, 30-25, 30-27, 30-13) victory. With the win, TWU snaps a 10-match losing streak to TAMU-C, dating back to November 8, 1997. Marci Brinkman (Carrollton, TX/Newman Smith H.S.) put in an all-around effort for the Pioneers, finishing with 12 kills, three service aces, five digs and five block assists.

"I told the team before the match that we were starting a new season because this was our first match in conference. The team came out fired up and played great throughout the entire match. They never got down after dropping the first game and it showed on the court," head coach Shelly Barberee said. "Our defense won the match for us tonight because they were digging and blocking the ball well. The team communicated on the court and mentally, they stayed in the match. This was a good win for this program."

TAMU-C came out firing in game one, hitting .154 with 16 kills and only eight errors. TWU struggled with 14 kills and 14 hitting errors, but kept the game close, losing 26-30. The Pioneers hit a little better in the second game, finishing with 13 kills and nine errors on 43 attacks for an attack percentage of .093. The Lady Lions did not execute as well as in game one and TWU knotted the match up at 1-1 with a 30-25 win. TWU got stronger as the match went on, recording a .189 hitting percentage with 17 kills while limiting the TAMU-C to just a .145 attack percentage with some great blocking. The Pioneers won game three 30-27, then rolled to a 30-13 win in game four, taking the match 3-1. TWU hit .394 in the final frame with 16 kills and only three errors on 33 attacks.

The Pioneers finished the match with 60 kills and 33 errors on 184 swings while also recording nine service aces, 89 digs and 18 block assists. The Lady Lions had three players in double figures in kills with Amy Wallace and LaTasha Jacobs leading the way with a match-high 17 kills. TWU had three other players finish in double-digits in kills with Courtney Lewis (San Antonio, TX/Panola College) recording 11, Jenny Madrid (Panama City, Panama/Hill College) chipping in 13 and Heather Smith (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala HS) leading the team with 16. Carley Messmer (Garland, TX/UT-San Antonio) led the team with 43 assists to go along with her 12 digs while Rochelle Schneider (Adkins, TX/Hill College) recorded a team-high 19 digs.

Up next, the Pioneers travel to Durant, Oklahoma to face Southeastern Oklahoma State in their second straight Lone Star Conference North Division match. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4. TWU defeated the Lady Savages during the Jo Kuhn Labor Day Classic, 3-1, on Aug. 30.
