PIONEERS PUSH TARLETON STATE TO FIVE

WICHITA FALLS, TX—The Texas Woman’s University volleyball team (2-15) pushed Tarleton State University (5-10) to a five-set match, but fell behind quickly in the deciding game and lost their third five-set match of the season, 2-3 (30-25, 30-32, 17-30, 30-23, 10-15). Courtney Lewis (San Antonio, TX/Panola College) turned in her second double-double performance on the weekend with 14 kills and 15 digs, but it was not enough to lift the Pioneers to a victory.

TWU came out firing in game one, hitting .250 with 14 kills on 36 swings. The Pioneers came from behind in the first frame to take a 12-11 lead. They extended that lead to as much as six points, 28-22, with Marci Brinkman (Carrollton, TX/Newman Smith H.S.) finishing off the TexAnns with a kill to win the game, 30-25. TWU looked unstoppable in game two as they shot out to an 18-11 lead. TSU didn’t quit and battled back to knot the game up at 19-19, thanks in large part to six kills from Lacey Adkisson. Both teams exchanged the lead nine times in the games final moments, with the TexAnns coming out on top 30-32. TSU controlled game three from start to finish, hitting a match-high .308 with 14 kills and taking a 1-2 advantage in the match with a 17-30 win.

The Pioneers bounced back in the fourth frame, jumping out to a five-point advantage, 13-8, after going on a 5-0 run. TWU held onto their lead and cruised to a 30-23 win by hitting a match-high .415 with 19 kills and two errors on 41 swings. Melanie Pabalate (Fort Worth, TX/Navarro College) recorded six of her 10 kills in game four. In the deciding game, the score was tied 2-2 when the TexAnns went on a 2-6 run to put the game away. The match ended on a kill from Desiree Ward as TSU won the game 10-15. Tarleton State recorded 13 more kills than TWU and finished with 73 and 35 errors on 197 attempts for a .193 attack percentage. Reed finished with a match-high 20 kills to lead both squads.

The Pioneers recorded a .191 hitting percentage with 60 kills and 26 errors on 178 swings, but struggled on service reception with 11 errors. Heather Smith (Chino Hills CA/Ayala H.S.) and Brinkman joined Pabalate and Lewis as the only Pioneers with double digits in kills. Smith finished with 11 kills and five digs while Brinkman turned in 13 kills and seven digs. Carley Messmer (Garland, TT/UT-San Antonio) finished with 51 assists, her second highest total of the season. She also added 12 digs, recording her second double-double of the weekend.

Up next, the Pioneers open up conference action as they travel to Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday, Oct. 2. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Then on Saturday, Oct. 4, they head to Durant, Oklahoma to face Southeastern Oklahoma State at 7 p.m.
