PIONEERS
OPEN LSC CROSSOVER WITH TWO LOSSES
WICHITA
FALLS, TX—The Texas Woman’s
University volleyball team (2-14) opened up the Lone Star
Conference Crossover Volleyball Tournament with a disappointing
2-3 (30-26, 30-13, 19-30, 20-30, 14-16) loss to Abilene
Christian (12-5) after leading 2-0 to start
the match. Then in the nightcap, Angelo State
(6-10) downed the Pioneers in three (22-30, 26-30, 11-30)
to end the day.
TWU
opened up their match with Abilene Christian a little slow,
falling behind 4-9. The Pioneers found a little energy after
a timeout and battled back
to take the lead in game one, 19-18, after a 15-9 run. The lead changed
hands four more times in the frame before TWU took control, thanks to three
kills from Courtney Lewis (San Antonio, TX/Panola College),
and won the game 30-26. It was all Pioneers in game two as TWU jumped out
to an early 8-2 lead and never looked back, winning game two and taking
a commanding 2-0 lead in the match, 30-13. The Pioneers recorded a .333
attack percentage in the frame with 13 kills and two errors on 33 swings
and held ACU to a negative .125 hitting percentage. The Wildcats came out
in game three fired up and won the frame 19-30, thanks to six kills from
Haylee Hartline.
Game
four was close in the early going as the lead changed hands
nine times in the first 24 points. ACU took the advantage,
12-13, and rolled to a
20-30 win thanks in large part to 21 kills and a .295 hitting percentage.
In the final frame, both teams did not let the other get out of sight as
the game was tied eight times before TWU went on a 3-0 run to take a 14-11
lead. Facing three match points, ACU recorded two kills and the Pioneers
had two hitting errors which allowed the Wildcats to win the game, 16-14,
and the match. This was the third five-set match this season that TWU has
lost and the first time this season that they have led 2-0 to start any
match. Three Pioneers finished the match in double figures in kills with Heather
Smith (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala H.S.) leading the way with 17
to go along with her 10 digs. Lewis also turned in a double-double with
10 kills and 16 digs while Paz Diaz (Truth or Consequences, NM/N.M.
Military Institute) led the team with 17 digs. Carley
Messmer (Garland, TX/UT-San Antonio) recorded five kills, 41
assists and 11 digs.
Angelo
State came out firing in the Pioneers second match, hitting
.278 in the first game with 20 kills. The Rambelles jumped
out to a 5-8 lead in
the early going and held on for most of the game. TWU kept things close
and knotted the game up at 21-21, thanks to four kills from Jenny
Madrid (Panama City, Panama/Hill College). That was as close as
the Pioneers would get as ASU went on a 1-9 run to end the first game,
22-30. Game two was close throughout as the lead changed hands 15 times.
Both teams were hitting well with ASU totaling 24 kills and an attack percentage
of .311 while the Pioneers had 11 kills and a .205 attack percentage. With
the game tied at 25-25, the Rambelles finished the game off with four kills,
26-30, and took a 0-2 lead in the match. Game three was not even a contest
as ASU quickly jumped to a 2-15 lead and never looked back, winning 11-30.
The Rambelles hit .293 for the match with 59 kills and 18 errors on 140
swings. They had four players in double figures in kills with Lindsey Jones
leading the way with 14.
TWU
finished with 29 kills and 15 errors on 125 swings for a
.112 hitting percentage, but the difference in the game was
the Pioneers inability to block the
ASU offense. Madrid led TWU with eight kills while Messmer totaled 23 assists. Rochelle
Schneider (Adkins, TX/Hill College) finished with a team-high
13 digs.
Up
next, the Pioneers face Tarleton State at 11
a.m. on Saturday to finish out the Lone Star Conference Crossover
Volleyball Tournament.
TSU lost the Texas A&M-Commerce, 3-1, in an early match on the day.
