PIONEERS DROP 3-0 DECISION TO ST. EDWARD’S

AUSTIN, TX—St. Edward’s (10-6) recorded 17 more kills and eight less reception errors as they rolled to a 0-3 (21-30, 23-30, 27-30) victory over Texas Woman’s University (2-12) in volleyball. The Pioneers hit .123 as a team, but did not record a block for the first time this season, which allowed the Hilltoppers to rack up 51 kills.

TWU recorded 12 kills and four errors on 40 swings for a .200 attack percentage, their best average during the match, but it was not enough to stop St. Edward’s from taking game one 21-30. Game two was a little closer even though the Pioneers turned in nine hitting errors, losing the frame 23-30. The Hilltoppers, led by Jamie Shackelford, won a close game three 27-30 with 21 kills, compared to TWU’s 11. Shackelford finished with a match-high 14 kills and a .462 hitting percentage.

TWU finished the match with 34 kills and 18 errors on 130 swings for a .123 attack percentage. The Pioneers recorded 48 digs, but committed eight service and 11 reception errors en route to the loss. Heather Smith (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala H.S.) led the team with 11 kills while Courtney Lewis (San Antonio, TX/Panola College) turned in a team-high 13 digs. Meredith Fry (Burnet, TX/Burnet H.S.) led the team with 22 assists for the first time this season.

Up next, the Pioneers will participate in the Lone Star Conference Crossover on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26-27 in Wichita Falls, Texas. They will play Abilene Christian at 1:00 p.m. and Angelo State at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, then face Tarleton State at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
