PIONEERS
DROP 3-0 DECISION TO ST. EDWARD’S
AUSTIN, TX—St. Edward’s
(10-6) recorded 17 more kills and eight less reception
errors as they rolled to a 0-3 (21-30, 23-30, 27-30) victory
over Texas Woman’s University (2-12) in volleyball.
The Pioneers hit .123 as a team, but did not record a block
for the first time this season, which allowed the Hilltoppers
to rack up 51 kills.
TWU
recorded 12 kills and four errors on 40 swings for a .200
attack percentage, their best average during the match, but
it was not enough to stop St.
Edward’s from taking game one 21-30. Game two was a little closer
even though the Pioneers turned in nine hitting errors, losing the frame
23-30. The Hilltoppers, led by Jamie Shackelford, won a close game three
27-30 with 21 kills, compared to TWU’s 11. Shackelford finished with
a match-high 14 kills and a .462 hitting percentage.
TWU
finished the match with 34 kills and 18 errors on 130 swings
for a .123 attack percentage. The Pioneers recorded 48 digs,
but committed eight service
and 11 reception errors en route to the loss. Heather Smith (Chino
Hills, CA/Ayala H.S.) led the team with 11 kills while Courtney
Lewis (San Antonio, TX/Panola College) turned in a team-high
13 digs. Meredith Fry (Burnet, TX/Burnet H.S.) led the
team with 22 assists for the first time this season.
Up
next, the Pioneers will participate in the Lone Star Conference
Crossover on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26-27 in Wichita
Falls, Texas. They will
play Abilene Christian at 1:00 p.m. and Angelo State at 5:00 p.m. on Friday,
then face Tarleton State at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
