PIONEERS TAKE INCARNATE WORD TO THE LIMIT

LAWTON, OK—Texas Woman’s University (1-10) forced Incarnate Word (7-6) to a fifth game, but fell behind early in the final frame and lost the match 2-3 (25-30, 30-26, 22-30, 30-22, 9-15) in the Southwest Region Challenge, hosted by Cameron University. The Pioneers lost 3-1 to Incarnate Word at the Jo Kuhn Labor Day Tournament on Aug. 29.

"The team played well together for the first time in a couple of weeks and almost won the match. I have been stressing to the team all year to communicate on the court and they did that today," head coach Shelly Barberee said. "The team played with a lot of heart and gave it all they had this afternoon, they just came up a little short. Rochelle Schneider did a good job on defense for us today and Marci Brinkman lifted up her game on the offensive side."

TWU jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in game one, but UIW fought back to knot the game up a 7-7. The Crusaders slowly crept out to a 14-19 lead before the Pioneers went on a 5-0 run to close the lead to one. UIW took the first game 25-30 on the strength of 17 kills. In game two, both teams exchanged the lead four times before TWU took control of the game after Marci Brinkman (Carrollton, TX/Newman Smith H.S.) connected on back-to-back kills to give the Pioneers a 16-12 advantage. TWU held onto their four-point lead and won game two 30-26 thanks to a .289 attack percentage. Game three was close in the early going as both teams exchanged the lead a match-high five times before the Crusaders took control midway and rolled to a 22-30 win. TWU controlled game four from start to finish, recording 17 team kills and causing 11 hitting errors by UIW. The Pioneers sent the match into a fifth set with a 30-22 win. With the score tied 4-4 in the final frame, the Crusaders went on a 0-6 run and held on to win the game, 9-15, and the match.

The Pioneers finished the match with 65 kills and 36 hitting errors on 182 swings for an attack percentage of .159. TWU had three players in double figures in kills with Brinkman and Jenny Madrid (Panama City, Panama/Hill College) leading the way with a game-high 18. Heather Smith (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala H.S.) chipped in with 11 kills to go with her six digs. Brinkman recorded a double-double when she added 12 digs to her 18 kills. Carley Messmer (Garland, TX/UT-San Antonio) had a double-double of her own when she turned in a match-high 35 assists with 12 digs. Paz Diaz (Truth or Consequences, NM/N.M. Military Institute) led the Pioneers with 13 digs.

UIW had four players record double digits in kills with Amanda Carrejo leading the way with 17. The Crusaders totaled 73 kills and 36 errors on 198 swings for an attack percentage of .187.

Up next, the Pioneers face St. Mary’s at 10 a.m. and Drury at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20 in the final day of the Southwest Region Challenge Volleyball Tournament.
