ACU
DOWNS PIONEERS IN VOLLEYBALL
ABILENE,
TX—Lone Star Conference South Division member
Abilene Christian University (6-4) hit at a .265 clip with
40 kills to edge past Texas Woman’s University (1-8)
0-3 (21-30, 22-30, 18-30) in volleyball Friday night. Heather
Smith (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala H.S.) and Robin
Hawkins (Flower Mound, TX/Flower Mound HS) both
recorded 10 kills apiece to lead the Pioneers.
"We
need to learn to match our opponents tempo to our own. The
defense played great tonight, but our middle block just couldn’t
fill the holes soon enough," head coach Shelly
Barberee said. "We were up in the first
two games, but Abilene Christian went on scoring streaks
and took control of the match. Our hitters need to do a better
job of finishing and put more balls down on the court. Paz
Diaz did another nice job on defense and Melanie Pabalate
did a good job of bringing some energy to our team."
TWU
actually recorded more kills than ACU in game one, but the
Pioneers committed five more hitting errors and lost the
first frame 21-30. In game two, both teams hit well as TWU
recorded a .257 attack percentage with 16 kills on 35 swings
while the Wildcats hit .265 with 13 kills on 34 swings. Errors
were the difference again as ACU took control of the match
with a 22-30 win. The final set saw the Wildcats hold TWU
to just eight kills with a match-low .026 hitting percentage.
ACU recorded 17 kills on 36 attempts to win the game, 18-30,
and the match.
The
Pioneers finished with 37 kills and 23 errors on 111 swings
for a hitting percentage of .126. TWU out-blocked the Wildcats
nine to five, but ACU had the advantage in digs, 41 to 35. Carley
Messmer (Garland, TX/UT-San Antonio) led the team
with 21 assists while Paz Diaz (Truth or Consequences,
NM/N.M. Military Institute) finished with a match-high
nine digs.
Up
next, the Pioneers continue their road trip on Saturday
as they play Angelo State at 2 p.m.
