TWU VOLLEYBALL LOSES TWO MORE TO END FORT LEWIS INVITATIONAL

DURANGO, CO—The Texas Woman’s University volleyball team (1-7) continued to struggle in the second day of the Fort Lewis Invitational, losing both of their matches to New Mexico Highlands University, 0-3 (21-30, 24-30, 26-30), and Chadron State College, 1-3 (24-30, 31-29, 19-30, 29-31).

"New Mexico Highlands attacked well in the middle and we couldn’t close the gap and get their offense blocked. We just didn’t play well as a team and that hurt us in the match," head coach Shelly Barberee said. "We played better in the second match, but we couldn’t put it all together. We are committing too many errors and are very inconsistent on the court. I am trying to find the right rotation of girls who want to play hard, but it is a difficult task right now."

New Mexico Highlands registered a straight set victory over TWU in game one today by holding the Pioneers’ offense to just 27 kills. Freshman Robin Hawkins (Flower Mound, Tex./Flower Mound H.S.) led the team with eight kills and eight digs while Carley Messmer (Garland, Tex./UT-San Antonio) turned in a team-high 13 assists. The Pioneers committed 21 hitting errors and five service errors in the loss.

The Pioneers played better in their second match of the day against Chadron State, recording 51 kills on a season-high 192 swings, but 32 hitting errors and nine reception errors proved to be the difference in the 1-3 loss. Jenny Madrid (Panama City, Panama/Hill College) led the team with 12 kills on 37 attempts while Messmer recorded a team-high 37 assists to go along with her 12 digs. Paz Diaz (Truth or Consequences, N.M./N.M. Military Institute) played well on the defensive side of the ball, chipping in with 21 digs.

Up next, the Pioneers continue their road trip during the month of September facing Lone Star Conference South Division rival Abilene Christian on Friday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. Then on Saturday, they play Angelo State at 2 p.m. .
