TWU VOLLEYBALL DROPS BOTH MATCHES IN FIRST DAY OF FORT LEWIS INVITATIONAL

DURANGO, CO—Texas Woman’s Univ. (1-5) opened the Fort Lewis College Invitational Volleyball Tournament on a sour note with a poor showing in a 0-3 (22-30, 25-30, 29-31) loss to Adams State. They rebounded with a hard fought match, giving tournament host Fort Lewis (4-2) all they could handle in a 2-3 (30-26, 26-30, 30-27, 28-30, 13-15) loss in the second match of the day. Junior Paz Diaz (Truth or Consequences, N.M./N.M. Military Institute) recorded 40 digs on the day including a team-high 30 vs. FLC.

"The girls did not play well in our first match against Adams State. I think the altitude and a long trip up here worked against us, but we just didn’t show up at all," head coach Shelly Barberee said. "We played awesome in our second match. Every game was close and it could have gone either way, but Fort Lewis came out on top. Our defense was great, led by Paz Diaz, and that kept us in the match."

Adams State controlled the Pioneers first match of the day from start to finish. TWU recorded 34 kills and 19 hitting errors on 113 total attacks with Marci Brinkman (Carrollton, TX/Newman Smith H.S.) leading the way with 12 kills. Carley Messmer (Garland, TX/UT-San Antonio) recorded 21 assists while Diaz finished with 10 digs in the 0-3 loss.

The Pioneers recorded a season-high 76 kills, but 44 hitting errors and 12 service errors proved to be the difference in their 2-3 loss to FLC. TWU took games one and three by the scores of 30-26 and 30-27 by hitting a combined 37 kills. They actually registered more kills than FLC, but the Skyhawks totaled 123 digs to TWU’s 110 and won the second, fourth and fifth games to take the victory. Four Pioneers recorded double digits in kills with Heather Smith (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala H.S.) leading the way with 18 kills. She also added 10 digs to register her first double-double of the season. Messmer recorded TWU’s first triple-double of the season as she finished the match with 13 kills, 30 assists and 11 digs. Robin Hawkins (Flower Mound, TX/ Flower Mound H.S.) also turned in a double-double by recording 14 kills and 13 digs. Diaz led the team with 30 digs while Melanie Pabalate (Fort Worth, TX/Navarro College) turned in a game-high 5 block assists to go along with her 15 kills.

Up next, the Pioneers face New Mexico Highlands at noon and Chadron State at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6 in the final day of the Fort Lewis College Invitational Volleyball Tournament.
