PIONEERS SPLIT THEIR MATCHES IN THE FINAL DAY OF THE
JO KUHN LABOR DAY TOURNAMENT

DENTON, TX—The Texas Woman’s University volleyball team (1-3) finished the Jo Kuhn Labor Day Tournament on a high note as they defeated Lone Star Conference rival Southeastern Oklahoma State University (1-3) 3-1 (18-30, 30-12, 30-22, 30-27) for their first victory of 2003. The University of the Incarnate Word (2-1) handed the Pioneers their third loss of the season early in the day with a 3-1 (30-26, 22-30, 30-23, 31-29) win. Junior outside hitter Jenny Madrid (Panama City, Panama/Hill College) earned First Team All-Tournament honors after she averaged 12 kills per match during the weekend.

The Pioneers kept game one close in their match against Incarnate Word despite a negative hitting percentage with nine kills and 12 attack errors. The Crusaders won game one by the score of 26-30, but TWU answered back with a game two win 30-22. The Pioneers steadily increased their attack percentage as the match went on, recording 14 kills and only seven errors in the third frame and 13 kills and six errors in the fourth game. Incarnate Word, led by Michaela Settlemeyer and Amanda Carrejo with a total of 21 kills, won the third and fourth games, 23-30 and 29-31, to take the match. The Pioneers came from behind in game four to knot the game at 29 apiece, but an attack error and a ball-handling error put an end to their comeback.

Senior Marci Brinkman (Carrollton, TX/Newman Smith H.S.) recorded the team’s first double-double of the season as she recorded 12 kills and 12 digs. Madrid finished with a match-high 14 kills while Carley Messmer (Garland, TX/UT-San Antonio) turned in with 39 assists. TWU hit .080 as a team with 47 kills and 33 errors on 175 total attacks.

After dropping the first game 18-30 in their match against Southeastern Okla., TWU poured on the offense to walk away with a decisive 3-1 victory. The Pioneers recorded season highs for kills (65), total attacks (188) and attack percentage (.213). They recorded 18 kills with only four hitting errors in the second frame, led by Brinkman’s five kills, and held the Lady Savages to a negative .171 attack percentage to win 30-12. It was much of the same in game three as TWU recorded 17 kills on 45 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .267 to take the frame 30-22. Game four was close as both teams exchanged the lead on numerous occasions before the Pioneers took control at the end, winning 30-27 on a kill from freshman Robin Hawkins (Flower Mound, TX/Flower Mound H.S.).

Four Pioneers recorded double-digits in kills for the first time this season with Hawkins leading the way with 16 kills. Heather Smith (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala HS) turned in a season-high 14 kills while Madrid and Brinkman each chipped in with 12 apiece. Messmer recorded a season-high 45 assists and junior transfer Paz Diaz (Truth or Consequences, NM/N.M. Military Institute) earned a season-high 17 digs. Madrid also recorded one solo block and five block assists, to lead both teams.

Up next, the Pioneers travel to Durango, Colo. to participate in the Fort Lewis College Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5-6. TWU will face Adams State at 1 p.m. and Fort Lewis at 5 p.m. on Friday, then play New Mexico Highlands at 10 a.m. and Chadron State at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
