PIONEER
VOLLEYBALL DROPS FIRST TWO MATCHES IN
JO KUHN LABOR DAY
TOURNAMENT
DENTON, TX—The Texas Woman’s
University volleyball team began their 2003 season on a
sour note as they lost both of their matches in the opening
day of the Jo Kuhn Labor Day Tournament. Southern Arkansas
(2-0) defeated the Pioneers (0-2) in three (19-30, 26-30,
22-30) to begin the day, then Harding (2-0) downed
TWU in
the second match for both teams, 0-3 (18-30, 27-30, 17-30).
Junior transfer Jenny Madrid (Panama City, Panama/Hill
College) led the team with a total of 23 kills on the day.
The
Pioneers kept game one against Southern Arkansas close in
the early going, but the Muleriders went on a 7-0 run with
the score sitting at 7-8 to take
a commanding lead. SAU closed out the first game, 30-18, by hitting .389
as a team with 16 kills on 36 total attacks. TWU bounced back in game two,
taking a 7-4 lead after kills by Melanie Pabalate (Fort Worth,
TX/Navarro College) and Madrid. They kept their lead for most
of the game, extending to a 21-13 margin late in the frame. SAU fought
back on the strength of 17 kills to take the second game 26-30. The Pioneers
led game three in the early going, but the Muleriders never let TWU get
too far ahead and took control of the game when Rochelle Schneider
(Adkins, TX/Hill College) and Carley Messmer (Garland,
TX/UT-San Antonio) had back-to-back attack errors, making the
score 10-11. SAU quickly took a 16-23 lead and never looked back, winning
the game and the match, 22-30.
Madrid
led the team with 12 kills and a .226 attack percentage while
Messmer led the squad with 20 assists and nine digs. Marci
Brinkman (Carrollton, TX/Newman Smith H.S.) chipped
in with eight kills and a game-high three service aces. TWU
hit .059 as a team with 39 kills and 31 errors
on 135 total attacks while SAU recorded 51 kills and 12 errors on 114 total
attacks for a .342 hitting percentage.
It
was much of the same for TWU in the second match of the day
as Harding University rolled to a 3-0 victory. Harding took
game one by the score of 18-30 by
hitting .250 as a team with 17 kills and limiting the Pioneers to a negative
.023 attack percentage with 11 kills and 12 errors. TWU did not fair any
better in the second and third frames as they registered 25 hitting errors
and a negative .055 attack percentage. Harding took games two and three
by the scores of 27-30 and 17-30, respectively. HU hit .217 as a team with
44 kills on 120 attacks while TWU struggled with a -.043 hitting percentage
with 31 kills and 37 errors on 139 attacks. Madrid again led the team with
11 kills while Messmer recorded a team-high 16 assists.
