SEVEN NEWCOMERS JOIN VOLLEYBALL TEAM FOR 2003 SEASON

DENTON, TX—Texas Woman's University head volleyball coach Shelly Barberee announced the signing of seven new players to national letters of intent for the 2003-2004 academic school year. Joining the Pioneers for the 2003 season are Paz Diaz (Truth or Consequences, NM/N.M. Military Institute), Courtney Lewis (San Antonio, TX/Panola College), Jenny Madrid (Panama City, Panama/Hill College), Rochelle Schneider (Adkins, TX/Hill College), Ana Kordic (Dubrovnik, Croatia/Arkansas-Little Rock), Carley Messmer (Garland, TX/UT-San Antonio) and Robin Hawkins (Flower Mound, TX/Flower Mound H.S.)

“Paz is a very aggressive defensive player who can dig up balls anywhere on the court. Rochelle sees everything on the court and can read the ball well. She is a great leader who can play front or back row,” head coach Shelly Barberee said. “Courtney is an outside hitter who can also play well on defense. She can attack a ball as well as any 5'10” girl that I have seen. Jenny is a very mobile middle blocker who can put the ball on a dime anywhere on the court. She also brings a lot of international experience with her to TWU.”

Diaz is 5-1 defensive specialist who earned an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts and Physical Education from New Mexico Military Institute in 2003. She lettered in volleyball for two seasons and was named All-Conference in 2002 and 2003 and All-Region in 2003. A 2001 graduate of Hot Springs High School, Diaz lettered in basketball, volleyball and softball. She was tabbed Honorable Mention All-District as a sophomore and All-District as a junior in volleyball. Diaz earned All-State honors in 2001 as a senior while also being named All-District and Most Valuable Player in basketball and softball. Paz is the daughter of Nelson and Christina Diaz of Truth or Consequences, N.M.

Lewis is another defensive specialist who earned an Associate of Science Degree in 2003 from Panola College in Carthage, Texas. She lettered in volleyball for the Fillies in 2001 and 2002 and was a two-year captain. Lewis was named All-District and All-Region in 2002 while recording 68 service aces and 415 kills. She was also named a Distinguished Academic All-American in her final year of junior college. A 2001 graduate of Reagan High School in San Antonio, Texas, Lewis lettered in volleyball and track and graduated in the top 15% of her class. She was named First Team All-District, Second Team All-City and was an alternate for the Texas Girls Coaches Association Western Region All-Star Team in 2000. Lewis earned numerous player-of-the-week honors and also won the Whataburger Acclaimed Athlete and Chick-fil-A's Student Athlete Awards. Courtney is the daughter of Tom and Lynda Lewis of San Antonio, Texas. She will be studying Dental Hygiene at TWU.

Madrid is a 6-1 outside hitter who followed new head coach Shelly Barberee from Hill College. She earned her Associates Degree in 2003 from Hill and lettered for two years in volleyball. Madrid led the nation in blocks per game in 2001 and was named All-Conference and All-Region V while also being selected to four All-Tournament teams. She duplicated her freshman performance by being named All-Conference and All-Region V as a sophomore while again earning four All-Tournament teams selections. Madrid averaged 4.09 kills and 3.46 blocks per game at Hill College, was a member of the All-Academic Team in 2002 and named Ms. Hill College in 2003. She graduated from Institute Fermin Naudeau in 1999 and lettered in judo and volleyball while in high school. Madrid played for the Panamanian National Junior and Senior teams and was named her team's Most Valuable Player in 1998 and 1999. Madrid will major in Business Administration at TWU.

Schneider is the third defensive specialist and second player from Hill College to sign with TWU. She lettered for two seasons at Hill and was ranked 12th in the country in assists and digs in 2002. Schneider was tabbed an NJCAA Academic All-American in 2001 and 2002 and named to the Dean's List every semester while also being a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She helped guide Hill College to the 2001 national tournament. Schneider is a 2001 graduate of East Central High School in San Antonio, Texas where she lettered in volleyball and softball for two years. She earned Honorable Mention All-District 8-5A honors in volleyball as a junior and senior and was voted team captain in 2000. Schneider also earned Honorable Mention All-District 8-5A in softball in 2001. An outstanding student as well, Schneider was a member of the Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society and the National Honor Society and was named to the All-Academic team in 1999 and 2000. Rochelle is the daughter of Beth Johnson of Adkins, Texas. She plans on studying in Business and Accounting at TWU.

“Ana is another player who brings some international experience to our team. She is a tall, mobile front row player who is improving her hitting. Carley is a great setter I tried to recruit out of high school. She can set the ball from anywhere to any place on the court,” Barberee said. “Robin is our lone freshman signee this year. She is a very strong and athletic player, who plays smart and aggressive on the court.”

Kordic is a 6-1 middle blocker who lettered for one season at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. She played in 32 games and recorded five kills, six assists, two service aces and 41 digs. Kordic graduated from Economic High School in 2002 and lettered for four years in volleyball. She led her high school team to four straight regional championships and a berth in the national finals. Kordic played club volleyball for Dubrovniki in her hometown of Dubrovnik. Ana is the daughter of Zora and Nikola Kordic of Dubrovnik, Croatia. She plans on studying Marketing at TWU.

Messmer is a 5-8 setter who transfers to TWU after playing for one season at the University of Texas-San Antonio. She saw action in 32 games and led the Roadrunners in assists (1,103) and assists per game (9.76). Messmer also finished second on the team with 260 digs and recorded a season-best of 59 assists vs. Northwestern State on Nov. 16, 2002. A 2002 graduate of South Garland High School, Messmer lettered in volleyball for four years and helped lead South Garland to back-to-back district titles and a 14-0 mark in 2000. She was named Most Valuable Player of her high school team as a sophomore, junior and senior and earned All-Tournament honors at the 2001 Tour of Texas 17s division. Messmer was elected team captain as a sophomore, junior and senior. She was named Second Team All-District in 1998 and First Team All-District in 1999 and 2000. Messmer graduated in the top five percent of her class and was a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club. She was tabbed a Texas Scholar and was a four-time winner of the Garland I.S.D. Academic Excellence Award. Carley is the daughter of Glenn and Bette Messmer of Garland, Texas. She plans on studying Allied Health at TWU.

Hawkins is the only true freshman signee for Coach Barberee in 2003. She is a 5-10 outside hitter who graduated from Flower Mound High School in 2003. Hawkins lettered in volleyball, soccer and track for the Jaguars and earned Honorable Mention All-District 6-5A honors as a junior and senior. She was voted Outstanding Hitter as a freshman at Flower Mound H.S. and named team captain as a senior. She won the Flower Mound H.S. Soccer Defense Award in 2000 and set a new school record in the shotput in 2002. Hawkins graduated in the top 10 percent of her class and was a member of the National Honor Society and the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society. Robin Michelle is the daughter of David and Patti Hawkins of Flower Mound, Texas.
