DENTON,
TXTexas Woman's University Director of
Athletics Chalese Connors announced today that Michelle
Barberee has been appointed as the Pioneers eighth head volleyball coach.
Barberee comes to TWU after spending the past six years as
the head volleyball coach at Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas.
This is a great opportunity for me to step up to the
next level in the coaching ranks. TWU is a great university
with a tradition of winning volleyball and I only hope to continue
that tradition, new head coach Shelley Barberee said. My
focus in the first year is to bring in some good student-athletes
and create a good foundation from which we can build on.
Barberee turned in a 202-81 record in her six years at Hill
College and led the Lady Rebels to the National Junior College
Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament in 1999 and
2001. The Lady Rebels won the conference championship from
1999-2002 and made it to the Regional V finals each of those
four seasons, under Barberee's direction. In 2002, the Lady
Rebels went 12-0 in the NTJCAC and 38-8 overall. She was named
Region V Coach-of-the-Year in 1999 and 2001.
Barberee has coached 18 All-Region athletes, eight Academic
All-Americans and four NJCAA All-Americans. For the past two
years, she has been the Kinesiology Division Director. As Director,
Barberee was the advisor for all Hill College Kinesiology students
and scheduled all Health and Kinesiology classes for both the
Hillsboro and Johnson County campuses. She has instructed on
numerous subjects in her six years at Hill College, such as
CPR/First Aid, Volleyball/Tennis, Sports Officiating, Weight
training, Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries and Lifetime
Sports.
Barberee earned her Masters of Education in 1997 and her Bachelors
of Science in 1994 at Stephen F. Austin State University in
Nacgodoches, Texas. While at SFA, she worked as an athletic
trainer for basketball, football, soccer and softball teams.
Barberee was a letterwinner in volleyball and softball at Hill
College from 1990-92, earning All-Conference honors in softball
in 1992. She is a member of the Texas Association for Health,
Physical Education, the Texas Community College Teachers Association
and the National Volleyball Coaches Association.
Shelly Barberee brings so much to our program and I
am looking forward to seeing her in action with our team. She
is energetic and highly motivated, which we need right now
with recruiting and the spring volleyball season in full swing, Connors
said. She
is highly respected among her peers and we are very happy to
have her as a member of our Pioneer family."
