SIX PIONEER VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS EARN CONFERENCE ACADEMIC RECOGNITION

DENTON, TX—The Lone Star Conference announced its 2002 volleyball academic honors for the North Division and Adalene Wright (Garland, TX/South Garland HS) was named to the 2002 North Division All-Academic Volleyball team for a third consecutive year. Five other Pioneers, Johanna Hubbard (Southlake, TX/Carroll H.S.), Heather Smith (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala H.S.), Marci Brinkman (Carrollton, TX/Newman Smith H.S.), April Hollub (Weimar, TX/Weimar H.S.) and Jacque James (Pleasanton, TX/Pleasanton H.S.), were selected to the Commissioner's Honor Roll.

A total of 21 student-athletes qualified for the Commissioner's Honor Roll by having at least a 3.20 grade point average, completing a minimum of 24 semester hours at her institution and lettering in the sport. From that list, the league's sports information directors selected six to the All-Academic Team, a squad based on both academic and athletic achievement.

Adalene Wright led the Pioneers in kills for a third straight season, earning 396 kills, 352 digs and 75 total blocks in 114 games played in 2002. She was selected to the Conference All-Academic team from 2000 to 2002 and was named to the Verizon Academic All-District VI First Team for a second straight season last week. Johanna Hubbard finishes her career at TWU with a third consecutive Honor Roll selection. She recorded 3,777 assists in her four years and turned in 16 service aces and 168 digs in 2002. Heather Smith makes her second appearance on the Commissioner's Honor Roll and capped off the season by finishing second on the team with a career-high 221 kills and 283 digs. Marci Brinkman averaged 1.47 kills, 2.01 digs and 0.35 service aces per game en route to her second straight appearance on the Honor Roll. April Hollub and Jacque James are making their first appearances to the Commissioners' Honor Roll. Hollub finished eighth in the conference with a career-high 110.0 total blocks at an average of 0.96 per game. James spent most of the season at the Libero position and totaled 120 digs, 16.0 blocks and 17 assists.
