PIONEERS
END SEASON WITH DISSAPPOINTING LOSS
DENTON,
TXTexas Woman's University played Cameron
(15-13, 7-3 LSC) about as well as they played
anybody this season, but some costly serving and reception
errors proved to be the difference in a 0-3 (18-30, 25-30,
28-30) loss. The loss, which marked the 10th straight
time the Pioneers have lost to Cameron, ended TWU's season
with a record of 7-25 overall, 3-7 in conference play. Senior
outside hitter Adalene Wright (Garland, TX/South Garland
H.S.) ended
her career on a high note with a game-high 14 kills.
We played much more consistently tonight than we did
against Central Oklahoma. I was happy with our team's performance
and glad they finished the season on a solid note, especially
with our two seniors, head coach Patty Dowdell said. Everyone
is going to go home feeling a little bit better because they
finished the season well.
Cameron set the tempo early in game one, jumping out to a
5-1 lead and never looking back. They won the first frame 30-18
by hitting .306 as a team with 13 kills on 36 swings while
TWU struggled with 10 hitting errors. The Aggies took the early
lead in game two, but TWU made a comeback to knot the game
up at 9-9 with the help of three straight kills from Wright.
The lead changed hands 11 times between both schools, but with
the score set at 24-24, Cameron went on a 6-1 run to win the
game 30-25. The Pioneers pulled out their best offensive attack
of the night in game three, recording 15 kills and a .208 attack
percentage while leading for most of the game. The Aggies fought
their way back into the game and forged eight ties in the game's
final 26 points. With the score knotted at 26-26, Cameron's
Megan Smith put down two kills and forced two hitting errors
by TWU to end the game, 28-30, and the match. The Aggies finished
the match with 51 kills on 150 swings for a hitting percentage
of .253 while the Pioneers had 40 kills and an attack percentage
of .148. TWU also totaled 34 assists, 67 digs and six team
blocks.
Johanna
Hubbard (Southlake, TX/Carroll H.S.) finished
off her TWU career on a good note by leading the team with
14 assists and a game-high 15 digs. Other notable performances
for the Pioneers were Heather Smith (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala
H.S.) with 10 kills while Jacque James (Pleasanton,
TX/Pleasanton H.S.) chipped in with a season-high 10
digs. Cameron had two players in double-digits in kills with
Christie Grayson recording 12 and Kelsey Kosick chipping in
with 11.
Adalene and Johanna are the first two players that I
have had at TWU to graduate and played four full seasons for
me. I am thankful that they made the commitment to come to
Texas Woman's University. They each played very well during
their four years, but I wish we could have shared some more
wins together. Not only are Adalene and Johanna fine athletes,
but they are great students as well who will find success after
they graduate from TWU, Dowdell said.
The Pioneers finished the 2002 season in fifth place in the
Lone Star Conference North Division with a record of 3-7 with
two wins over Southeastern Oklahoma State and one against Midwestern
State. They finished the season with 1,366 kills and 801 errors
on 4,661 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .121. Adalene
Wright led the team for a third straight season with 396 kills
and also paced the Pioneers with 352 digs. As a freshman, Meredith
Fry (Burnet, TX/Burnet H.S.) led TWU in assists with
469 while April Hollub (Weimar, TX/Weimar H.S.) was
the team's leading blocker with 110 total blocks in her sophomore
campaign. Another sophomore, Holly Mobley (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood
H.S.) finished as the team leader with 36 service aces.
