CENTRAL
OKLAHOMA HANDS TWU SIXTH CONFERENCE LOSS
DENTON,
TXCentral Oklahoma
(27-5, 7-1 LSC) recorded 49 kills and committed only nine
hitting errors for a 3-0 (30-24, 30-18, 30-18) victory over
Texas Woman's University (7-24, 3-6 LSC). The Pioneers played
well in the match, but they could not find a way to stop UCO's
big hitters, Lexy Fortner and Alma Brahimaj.
TWU jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in game one before the
Bronchos came alive with a 7-2 run to take the lead back, 8-9.
The game remained close as the Pioneers forced a tie at 21-21,
but three costly reception errors cost TWU the game, 24-30.
It was much of the same in game two as TWU jumped out to a
3-0 lead before UCO roared back with a 14-3 run to take control
of the game. The Bronchos hit a game-high .394 with 15 kills
on 33 swings to win the frame 18-30. The final game was close
in the early going as both teams exchanged the lead three times.
UCO took the lead at 9-10 and never looked back, thanks in
large part to Fortner's seven kills, winning the game, 18-30,
and the match. The Pioneers recorded 16 kills in game one,
but could only manage 16 in the final two frames for a .119
attack percentage in the match. Central Oklahoma turned in
a .360 hitting percentage with Fortner and Brahimaj leading
the team in kills with 15 and 11, respectively.
Adalene
Wright (Garland, TX/South Garland H.S.) needed
only nine kills to reach the 1,500 mark for her career coming
into tonight's match. She finished with a team-high 10 kills,
giving her 1,501 going into her final match as a Pioneer tomorrow
night. Other notable performances for the Pioneers were Heather
Smith (Chino Hills, CA/ Ayala H.S.) turning in a team-high
10 digs while Melanie Pabalate (Fort Worth, TX/Navarro
College) chipped in with a team-high two block assists.
TWU totaled 32 kills, 31 assists, 44 digs and four team blocks
against the Bronchos. TWU's loss marks the 10th straight
time the Pioneers have lost to Central Oklahoma, dating back
to 1997.
The
Pioneers turn out the lights on the 2002 season tomorrow
night as they host Cameron at 7 p.m. It will
be a special night in Kitty Magee Arena as TWU says good-bye
to departing senior's Adalene Wright and Johanna Hubbard.
