TARLETON STATE EDGES
PIONEERS IN FIVE-GAME SLUGFEST

TXThe Texas Woman's University volleyball
team (7-22) recorded a .147 attack percentage with 48 kills
on 170 swings, but it was not enough to overcome Tarleton State
(14-16), which recorded 72 kills and a .276 attack
percentage in a 2-3 (24-30, 31-29, 19-30, 30-21, 12-15) victory. Adalene
Wright (Garland, TX/South Garland H.S.) recorded her
11th double-double of the season, finishing with
20 kills and 15 digs.
Both team were hitting and defending the ball well during
game one, which saw 11 lead changes before Tarleton State went
on a 10-2 run in the final stages to win the frame 24-30. TWU
trailed for most of game two but fought back to a 25-25 tie.
The Pioneers played sideout volleyball and won the game 31-29
when the TexAnns had back-to-back hitting errors. Game three
was all Tarleton State as they used 16 kills and three service
aces by Shandy Joblin to win the game 30-19 and take a 2-1
advantage in the match. TWU came out firing in game four, taking
the lead after the third point and never looking back. The
Pioneers recorded four service aces, three by Sheri Hughes
(Arlington, TX/Des Moines C.C.), and 11 kills to push
the match to five games, 30-21. In the final game, Tarleton
State went up 0-3 before the Pioneers roared back to take the
lead 4-3. There were seven ties and eight lead changes before
the TexAnns won the last four points to win the game, 12-15,
and the match.
The Pioneers finished with 48 kills and 23 errors on 170 swings
for a .147 hitting percentage with 46 assists, 67 digs and
a game-high 11.5 team blocks. Heather Smith (Chino Hills,
CA/Ayala H.S.) recorded 12 kills and a team-high 17
digs while April Hollub (Weimar, TX/Weimar H.S.) chipped
in with seven kills and a game-high eight block assists. Tarleton
State had four players in double figures in kills with Desiree
Reed leading the way with a game-high 24 kills.
Next
up, the Pioneers travel to Fort Worth, Tex., to face Texas
Wesleyan on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7
p.m. TWU won its previous match with the Rams 3-1 in Denton
on Oct. 8.
