PIONEERS
FALL TO ANGELO STATE
DENTON,
TXThe Texas Woman's University volleyball
team (7-21, 3-5 LSC) played Angelo State (13-13)
even throughout their match in Abilene, Tex., but the Pioneers
committed 12 more hitting errors which ended up being the difference
in an 0-3 (28-30, 26-30, 28-30) loss. Senior outside hitter Adalene
Wright (Garland, TX/South Garland H.S.) rebounded from
a below average performance last night to record a game-high
22 kills on 42 swings.
The team played a lot better today and hit the ball
well. We just committed errors during critical times during
the match, head coach Patty Dowdell said. Angelo
State was able to put runs of points together that we could
not answer, but I was happy with our team's performance. Adalene
Wright had a good match for us with 22 kills and a .405 attack
percentage.
All three games were very close as each team hit the ball
well during the match. ASU took the advantage, 30-28 in game
one, when they recorded a .233 hitting percentage with 17 kills
on 43 swings while the Pioneers committed 10 hitting errors.
TWU turned in 19 kills to the Rambelles 13 in game two, but
again the errors were the difference as ASU won the game 30-26.
In the final frame, the Pioneers had a 17-8 lead before ASU
went on a run to finish off the game, 30-28, and the match.
TWU recorded more assists (45-41), more digs (51-43) than their
opponent, but the difference was hitting as the Rambelles recorded
47 kills with only 16 errors compared to the Pioneers 50 kills
and 28 errors.
Notable performances for TWU on the day were Heather Smith
(Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala H.S.) chipping in with six
kills and a team-high 13 digs while Meredith Fry (Burnet,
Tex./Burnet H.S.) and Sheri Hughes (Arlington, Tex./Des
Moines C.C.) shared the setting duties with 20 and 19,
respectively. Angelo State had three players in double figures
in kills with Nicole Stoffel leading the way with 12. TWU
hit .172 for the match and recorded three team blocks.
Next
up, the Pioneers return home to face another Lone Star Conference
South Division rival in Tarleton State University
on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.
