PIONEERS WIN CLOSE MATCH OVER DALLAS BAPTIST 3-1

DENTON, TX—The Texas Woman's University volleyball team (7-19, 3-5 LSC) came out firing in their match against Dallas Baptist (6-18), winning the first two games 30-16 and 30-21, then came from behind in the fourth game to win the match 3-1 (30-16, 30-21, 27-30, 30-28). Adalene Wright (Garland, TX/South Garland H.S.) recorded her 10th double-double of the season and led the Pioneers with 17 kills and 14 digs.

“This match was a mirror image of how we played at Dallas Baptist earlier in the season. They came out strong and won the first two games at their house, then struggled and held on for a two-point victory in the fourth game, which was exactly how this match turned out tonight except we were the ones on top,” head coach Patty Dowdell said. “I was happy with how well the team played in the early going and I was very excited that they hung tough in the final stages to win the match. Dallas Baptist started serving better in the third and fourth games, which brought them back into the match.”

The Pioneers came out fired up and it showed on the court as TWU built a 17-7 lead in game one after two separate runs of five unanswered points. They took the first frame 30-16 by hitting 11 kills on 29 swings for an attack percentage of .273. In game two, Dallas Baptist committed seven hitting errors, four service errors and four ball handling errors en route to a 30-21 win for TWU. The third frame went back and fourth as each team exchanged the lead nine times before the Patriots took control in the final stages and won 27-30. The Pioneers built a 9-3 advantage in game four before Dallas Baptist went on an 11-5 run to knot the game up at 14-14. The game was tied nine more times before Adalene Wright connected on her 17th kill to win the game, 30-28, and the match.

As a team, the Pioneers recorded 49 kills on 144 swings for a hitting percentage of .188 with 45 assists, 64 digs and 14 team blocks. Heather Smith (Chino Hills, CA/ Ayala H.S.) chipped in with nine kills on 22 attacks for a team-high .471 attack percentage while April Hollub (Weimar, TX/Weimar H.S.) recorded a career-high and team season-high four solo blocks to go along with her four kills. Hollub, Wright and Melanie Pabalate (Fort Worth, TX/Navarro College) each recorded five block assists on the night. Johanna Hubbard (Southlake, TX/Carroll H.S.) led the team with 19 assists while freshman Meredith Fry (Burnet, TX/Burnet H.S.) added 14.

Next up, the Pioneers travel to Abilene, Texas, to face Abilene Christian and Angelo State in a Lone Star Conference Crossover tournament. They will play ACU on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m., then face ASU on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m.
