PIONEERS DROP SECOND
STRAIGHT CONFERENCE VOLLEYBALL MATCH
WICHITA
FALLS, TXThe Texas Woman's University
volleyball team (6-19, 3-5 LSC) struggled offensively and
defensively in a 0-3 (20-30, 24-30, 24-30) loss to Midwestern
State (8-16, 4-4 LSC) Tuesday night. With only
two conference matches remaining in the 2002 season, the Pioneers
will need to win at least one to finish in a tie for fourth
place in the Lone Star Conference North Division.
The team struggled in every aspect of the game. We could
not put the ball away, pass well or get in position to make
good digs, head coach Patty Dowdell said. Midwestern
State played consistently and kept our team off-balance. We
have a week off to regroup and prepare for our final seven
matches of the season.
Midwestern State controlled the match by out-hitting, out-digging
and committing fewer errors than the Pioneers. The Indians
took game one by the score of 20-30 by hitting at .243 clip
with 15 kills and only six errors while limiting TWU to seven
kills and nine errors for a hitting percentage of -.061. The
Pioneers rebounded in game two with 18 kills and only eight
hitting errors, but MSU took the second frame with another
15-kill performance. The Indians finished off the match with
a 24-30 win in game three with 20 kills and seven errors compared
the Pioneers 10 kills and eight errors. Midwestern State finished
the match with 50 kills and 17 errors on 113 attacks for an
attack percentage of .292 while TWU hit at a .081 clip with
35 kills and 25 errors on 124 attacks.
Adalene
Wright (Garland, TX/South Garland H.S.) led
the Pioneers with 12 kills, eight digs and one solo block while April
Hollub (Weimar, TX/Weimar H.S.) hit at a .385 clip with
six kills on 13 attempts. Johanna Hubbard (Southlake, TX/Carroll
HS) finished with a team leading 17 assists. Two MSU
players finished in double-digits in kills with Kate Pence
leading the way with 12 kills while her teammate Melissa Minus
recorded 10. As a team, the Pioneers turned in 32 assists,
41 digs and three team blocks while the Indians chipped in
with 48 assists, 53 digs and six team blocks.
Next
up, the Pioneers enjoy a week off before they begin their
final stretch run of the 2002 season. They will host Dallas
Baptist University on Tuesday, Oct. 22 for Faculty/Staff
Appreciation night. The match is scheduled to begin at 7
p.m.
