PIONEERS START SLOW,
FINISH STRONG IN 3-1 VICTORY OVER SOUTHEASTERN
DURANT,
OKThe Texas Woman's University volleyball
team (6-17, 3-3 LSC) recorded a .000 attack percentage en
route to a game one loss, but rebounded to take the final three
frames and win their fourth straight match over Southeastern
Oklahoma State University (3-15, 0-6 LSC). Adalene Wright
(Garland, TX/South Garland H.S.) paced the team with
her ninth double-double of the season as she turned in 20 kills
and 13 digs.
We started tonight's match by going back to the offensive
formation we used during the first half of the season and it
did not work very well. So we regrouped and used the lineup
we used in our win against Texas Wesleyan and it paid off, head
coach Patty Dowdell said. The team did not hit very well,
finishing with a .088 attack percentage, but they communicated
with each other and blocked and dug the ball well to gain the
advantage.
Southeastern Oklahoma came out firing to win game one 22-30,
recording 18 kills and committing only three errors while holding
TWU to just nine kills. The Pioneers, with another offensive
formation, evened the match at one game apiece as they recorded
13 kills and caused the Lady Savages to commit 11 hitting errors
to win the frame 30-24. In the final two games, TWU turned
in 32 kills with just 19 errors and used some great defense
with some key blocks to take games three and four by the scores
of 30-28 and 30-22, respectively. The Pioneers finished the
match with 54 kills and 36 errors on 205 total attacks for
an attack percentage of .088 while also recording a new season-high
14.0 team blocks, 18 of which were assist blocks.
Wright also led the team with a game-high three solo blocks
while April Hollub (Weimar, TX/Weimar H.S.) turned
in her second double-double performance in as many matches,
finishing with 10 kills and 10 digs to go along with her five
block assists. Johanna Hubbard (Southlake, TX/Carroll
H.S.) led the team with 26 assists and chipped in with
19 digs, a season-high for her in 2002. Melanie Pabalate
(Fort Worth, TX/Navarro College) put in a good performance
by leading the team with three service aces and recording three
kills, three block assists and 15 digs.
Next
up, the Pioneers continue their conference road trip as they
travel to Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday, Oct.
12. The match with the Lady Lions has a 6 p.m. start
time.
