PIONEERS ROLL OVER TEXAS WESLEYAN IN VOLLEYBALL

DENTON, TX—The Texas Woman's University volleyball team (5-17, 2-3 LSC) turned in one of their best offensive matches of the season, hitting a season-high 66 kills and recording a team-best .283 attack percentage, en route to a 3-1 (30-16, 30-28, 30-32, 30-18) victory over Texas Wesleyan (7-8). Four Pioneers finished with double-digits in the kills, another season first, with Adalene Wright (Garland, TX/South Garland H.S.) leading the way with 20 kills and 25 digs.

“In tonight's match against Texas Wesleyan, we had a strong performance in all aspects of the game. We had a well balanced offensive attack with four players in double-digit kills and a season-high attack percentage,” head coach Patty Dowdell said. “Johanna Hubbard did a good job of setting in our 5-1 offensive formation. We dug the ball well and did a good job of blocking their attacks. We made some changes in our lineup which put people in new positions, but the girls stepped up and did a great job.”

The Pioneers were behind 6-8 in game one before they went on a 6-0 run to take over the lead. They added two runs of four and seven unanswered points to take the first frame 30-16. TWU recorded 16 kills on 33 attacks for a hitting percentage of .303 while limiting the Rams to just six kills in the game. Game two was nip and tuck the entire way as both teams exchanged the lead 14 times before the Pioneers got a sideout to make the score 29-28, then ended the game with a kill from April Hollub (Weimar, TX/Weimar H.S.). Texas Wesleyan took the third game 30-32 by registering a game-high .391 attack percentage with 20 kills and two errors on 46 total attacks. Game four was all TWU as the Pioneers took the lead in the early going and never looked back, winning the frame 30-18 with 18 kills and three errors on 47 total attacks.

Hollub finished the match with a career-high 18 kills and 16 digs. The other two Pioneers with double-digits in kills were Meredith Fry (Burnet, TX/Burnet H.S.), who recorded a season-high 12 kills, and Melanie Pabalate (Fort Worth, TX/ Navarro College) with 10 kills to go along with her 10 digs. Johanna Hubbard (Southlake, TX/Carroll H.S.) recorded a season-high 44 assists and 14 digs. As a team, the Pioneers finished with 66 kills and 17 errors on 173 total attacks, 56 assists, a team-high 86 digs and nine team blocks. Jacque James (Pleasanton, TX/ Pleasanton H.S.) recorded three season-high's tonight with an attack percentage of .286 on four kills and no errors, 15 digs and three service aces.

Next up, the Pioneers hit the road to face Southeastern Oklahoma State on Thursday, Oct. 10 and Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday, Oct. 12. The match with SOSU begins at 7 p.m., while the Lady Lions contest has a 6 p.m. start time.
