PIONEER VOLLEYBALL
0-2
AFTER FIRST DAY OF TOURNAMENT
SAN
ANGELO, TXThe
Texas Woman's University volleyball team (4-16, 2-3 LSC)
was not treated very well as Texas A&M-Kingsville
(9-9 overall) and No. 6 West Texas A&M (15-2) handed the
Pioneers two losses in the first day of the Lone Star Conference
Crossover Volleyball tournament held at Angelo State.
The Javelinas took their match by the score of 1-3 (25-30,
19-30, 30-26, 13-30) while West Texas A&M won 0-3 (21-30,
12-30, 17-30).
The team did not play very well today. We were inconsistent
in our hitting and committed too many errors in serve reception, head
coach Patty Dowdell said. It took us a while to get going
in our match with Texas A&M-Kingsville and West Texas A&M
is just a great team. Hopefully, we can rebound with a good
performance against Eastern New Mexico tomorrow.
Texas
A&M-Kingsville
won the first two games of their match 25-30 and 19-30 before
the Pioneers answered back by
hitting .194 and taking game three by the score of 30-26. TWU
recorded 38 kills in the first three frames, but could only
manage four in the fourth game while the Javelinas turned in
16 with an attack percentage of .324 to take the game, 13-30,
and the match. Heather Smith (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala
H.S.) finished the match with a double-double, 11 kills
and 12 digs, to lead the team in both categories. Adalene
Wright (Garland, TX/South Garland H.S.) chipped in with
eight kills, 11 digs and three block assists. Kathy Stephenson
led Texas A&M-Kingsville with a game-high 19 kills with
her teammate Stephanie Briscoe turning in 17 kills. TWU finished
the match hitting .049 with 42 kills and 35 errors on 142 total
attacks with 41 assists, 51 digs and seven team blocks.
TWU struggled
in their match against the sixth ranked team in the country,
West Texas A&M. The Pioneers committed
24 hitting errors and 11 reception errors on way to a straight-set
loss. They recorded a season-low hitting percentage of -.050
with 19 kills on 101 total attacks while the Lady Buffs recorded
49 kills and 16 errors on 98 total attacks for an attack percentage
of .337. Heather Smith again led the team with five kills while
Adalene Wright led the team with eight digs. West Texas A&M's
Shannon Stroud finished with a game-high 16 kills and 16 digs.
Next up, the Pioneers continue their play in the Lone Star
Conference Crossover on Saturday as they face Eastern New Mexico
at 12:30 p.m.
