PIONEERS
END SIX-GAME SKID WITH 3-0 WIN OVER MIDWESTERN STATE
DENTON,
TXThe Texas Woman's University volleyball
team (4-14, 2-3 LSC) recorded a season-high attack percentage
of .231 en route to a 3-0 (30-25, 30-25, 30-28) shutout of
conference rival Midwestern State (6-11, 2-3 LSC).
The Pioneers had three players in double figures in kills with Heather
Smith (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala H.S.) leading the way
with 13 kills and a team-high 14 digs.
It feels good to get a win and hopefully it will be
a good spring-board into our matches this weekend. All of the
hard work that these girls have been putting in during practice
finally showed through tonight, head coach Patty Dowdell
said. I think the whole team hustled very well tonight.
Heather Smith played a good match and Johanna Hubbard did a
good job of leading the team on the floor.
The
Pioneers fell into a 0-2 hole in game one before they went
on a 5-0 run to take the lead. There were 11 ties before
TWU jumped out to a 26-20 lead and held on to win 30-25. In
game two, Midwestern State held a 9-15 lead midway through
the frame when the Pioneers answered with a 9-3 run to knot
the game up at 18-18. They each exchanged the lead three times
before TWU built a little breathing room and cruised to a 30-25
win, with Sheri Hughes (Arlington, TX/Des Moines C.C.) serving
an ace to end the game. Game three was a close contest, but
TWU held the lead throughout the game until Midwestern State
forced a tie at 28-28. The Lady Indians committed a hitting
error and April Hollub (Weimar, TX/Weimar H.S.) smashed
the winning kill the give the Pioneers the game and the match.
Adalene
Wright (Garland, TX/South Garland H.S.) and Holly
Mobley (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood H.S.) were the other
two Pioneers with double-digits in kills, both finishing
with 10 kills apiece. Hughes led the team with 18 assists
while Johanna Hubbard (Southlake, TX/Carroll H.S.) chipped
in with 12. Marci Brinkman (Carrollton, TX/Newman Smith
H.S.) finished with a game-high four service aces. As
a team, the Pioneers recorded 47 kills and only 17 errors
on 130 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .231 with
38 assists and 51 digs.
Next
up, the Pioneers travel to San Angelo, Tex., to participate
in the Lone Star Conference Crossover Volleyball tournament.
On Friday, Oct. 4, TWU will play Texas A&M-Kingsville at
12:30 p.m. and West Texas A&M at 8 p.m. Then on Saturday,
they will face Eastern New Mexico at 12:30 p.m.
