PIONEERS DOWN SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA IN THREE GAMES

DENTON, TX--The Texas Woman's University volleyball team (3-8, 1-1 conf.) showed some grit in their conference contest against Southeastern Oklahoma State (2-6, 0-2 conf.), having to come from behind to win games one and three on their way to a 3-0 (30-25, 30-26, 31-29) shutout. Holly Mobley (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood H.S.) finished the match with a game-high 15 kills.

“The team played the entire match with the same intensity they had against Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday. The girls responded well when Marci Brinkman went down with an ankle injury. Jacque James came in a played well at her position,” head coach Patty Dowdell said. “In the third game, I was trying a different offensive formation and it did not work very well. Thankfully, the girls made a comeback to win the game. We have a week on non-conference action coming up and hopefully we can keep the intensity level high and pick up some more wins.”

The Pioneers jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead in game one before SOSU made a comeback and took a 9-13 advantage. TWU responded with a 6-2 run to knot the game up at 15-15. Each team exchanged the lead six more times before the Pioneers took the advantage and won the game 30-25. They recorded 17 kills on 47 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .255 in the first frame. Game two was close in the early going as both teams exchanged ties five times during the first 14 points. The Pioneers built a 13-9 advantage and never looked back, winning 30-26 with the help of 11 kills on 43 attacks. The Lady Savages took an early 0-4 lead in game three and did not relinquish the lead until TWU made a 7-2 run to knot the game up at 22-22. Each team traded the lead back and forth and with the game tied at 29-29, TWU served up two service aces to ice the game and the match.

The Pioneers finished the match with an attack percentage of .168 with 46 kills and 22 errors on 143 total attacks. Mobley recorded the teams only double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs. Heather Smith (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala H.S.) chipped in with 13 kills and eight digs while Sheri Hughes (Arlington, TX/Des Moines C.C.) led the Pioneers with 21 assists. Becky Wilson was Southeastern's leading attacker, finishing with 11 kills and 11 digs. TWU turned in 42 assists, 52 digs and six team blocks.

Next up, the Pioneers hit the road for three non-conference matches. They play Dallas Baptist University on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. in Dallas, then travel to Wichita Falls, Texas, to play in the Midwestern State Tournament. TWU will face Drury University at 3 p.m. and Wayland Baptist at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21.
