A&M-COMMERCE
HANDS PIONEERS FIRST CONFERENCE LOSS
DENTON, TX--The
Texas Woman's University volleyball team (2-8, 0-1 conf.)
recorded a season-high hitting percentage
of .211, but fell short in a 1-3 (30-25, 19-30, 21-30, 21-30)
loss to Texas A&M University-Commerce (7-0, 1-0 conf.).
Four Pioneers recorded double-digits in kills on the night,
a first for the team, with senior outside hitter Adalene
Wright (Garland, TX/South Garland H.S.) turning in a
game and season-high 17 kills.
We played a great match tonight, we were just physically
overmatched against Texas A&M-Commerce, head coach
Patty Dowdell said. The girls played with a lot of intensity,
which kept us in the match. Now they know the level they need
play at all the time to win matches.
The Pioneers came out of the blocks hot, charging to an 8-1
lead in game one before TAMU-C knew what had hit them. The
Lady Lions slowly chipped away at the lead, bringing the game
to its closest margin, 18-17. TWU then ran off four straight
points en route to a 30-25 win. The Pioneers took an early
lead in game two, 3-1, before TAMU-C rallied to knot the game
up at 7-7. The Lady Lions then went on a 7-0 run and put the
game out of reach, winning 19-30. In games three and four,
TAMU-C jumped out to five and six point margins and never let
the Pioneers get any closer. They took the final two frames
by the scores of 21-30 and 21-30 to win the match.
Texas A&M-Commerce
recorded a hitting percentage of .404 with 63 kills on only
eight hitting errors while TWU recorded
their season-high .211 attack percentage with 58 kills on 22
errors. The Pioneers recorded four more assists than their
opponents, 55-51, with Sheri Hughes (Arlington, TX/Des
Moines C.C.) leading the team with 29. Wright turned in
one of two double-double performances for the Pioneers with
17 kills and 13 digs while Marci Brinkman (Carrollton, TX/Newman
Smith H.S.) had 10 kills and 14 digs. Heather Smith
(Chino Hills, CA/Ayala H.S.) and Holly Mobley (Kingwood,
TX/Kingwood H.S.) rounded out the other two Pioneers
with double-digits in kills, with Smith recording 12 and Mobley
turning in 10 on the night.
Next
up, the Pioneers stay at home and face another conference
opponent in Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday, Sept.
14. The match begins at 7 p.m.
