TWU VOLLEYBALL SPLITS
THEIR MATCHES IN GRAND VISTA INVITATIONAL
DENTON, TX--The Texas Woman's University volleyball
team (2-5) defeated Colorado Christian 3-2 in their first match
of the day, then dropped an 0-3 decision to tournament host,
Mesa State College (2-4), in the first day of the Grand Vista
Invitational. Heather Smith (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala H.S.) led
the team with 15 kills against Colorado Christian and recorded
a game-high 14 digs vs. Mesa State.
We played a good match against Colorado Christian. The
kids hung around and played tough throughout and we walked
away with a win, head coach Patty Dowdell said. In
the second match against Mesa State, our hitting was not effective
and we weren't aggressive enough in the serving game. They
were a good team and their defense was a lot faster than what
we saw against Colorado Christian.
In the second match of the day, TWU kept the first and third
games close trying to stay in the match. Mesa State won game
one by the score of 28-30 by hitting at .146 clip with 14 kills
and eight errors while the Pioneers hit .050 with 10 kills
and eight errors. In the second frame, Mesa State poured it
on with 17 kills and only five errors in winning the game 20-30,
holding TWU to a negative hitting percentage. The Pioneers
rebounded and actually out-hit MSC, .250 to .146, but the Mavericks
took the game and the match, 28-30. April Hollub (Weimar,
Tex./Weimar H.S.) led the team with eight kills while Holly
Mobley (Kingwood, Tex./Kingwood H.S.) and Marci Brinkman
(Carrollton, Tex./Newman Smith H.S.) finished right behind
her with seven kills apiece. TWU finished the match with an
attack percentage of .073 with 34 kills and 25 errors on 124
total attacks while MSC recorded a .198 hitting percentage
with 45 kills and 20 errors on 126 total attacks. The Mavericks
had the defensive advantage, recording more digs (55) and team
blocks (9.0) than the Pioneers, who had 50 and 2.0 respectively.
TWU won their first match of the day against Colorado Christian
by the score of 19-30, 30-24, 30-28, 22-30, 15-8. The Pioneers
hit at a .198 clip and recorded a season-high 12.0 team blocks.
Mobley turned in 12 kills and a game-high five service aces
while Hollub notched 11 kills of her own.
Next
up, the Pioneers continue their play in the Grand Vista Invitational
when they face Bellarmine at 9 a.m. and Wisconsin-Parkside
at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7 to close out the tournament.
