PIONEERS NOTCH SHUTOUT
AGAINST CENTENARY IN VOLLEYBALL
DENTON,
TX--The Texas Woman's University volleyball
team (1-4) rebounded from a tough opening weekend at the Jo
Kuhn Labor Day Classic by handing the Centenary College Ladies
(0-5) a 3-0 shutout (30-17, 30-20, 30-27) victory in Kitty
Magee Arena. Adalene Wright (Garland, TX/South Garland
H.S.) and Holly Mobley (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood H.S.) both
recorded double digits in kills with Mobley finishing with
a game-high 11.
The intensity level on our team was high throughout
the match and the overall flow was better. We were much more
aggressive serving and playing defense, head coach Patty
Dowdell said. This victory came at a good time because
we had such poor opening weekend and showed the girls that
they are a good team. We were blocking the ball well and our
offense was spread around so we didn't have to rely on one
hitter.
The Pioneers blew game one open early thanks in large part
to April Hollub's (Weimar, TX/Weimar H.S.) four kills.
TWU turned in 13 kills in 31 total attacks and held Centenary
to just nine kills with six block assists to win game one by
the score of 30-17. Down 8-10 in game two, the Pioneers scored
seven unanswered points to take the lead. They never looked
back, winning the second frame 30-20. Centenary was held to
a negative hitting percentage as the TWU defense allowed only
six kills with seven hitting errors. Game three was the closest
of all as both teams exchanged the lead throughout. With the
game tied at 27-27, the Pioneers used three of their 15 kills
in the game to win their first match of the season.
TWU
recorded 43 kills and 20 hitting errors on 118 total attacks
to finish with a hitting percentage of .195. They recorded
eight service aces, with Marci Brinkman (Carrollton, TX/Newman
Smith H.S.) turning in a game-high three, and 12 team blocks,
22 of which were assists. Centenary hit at a .053 clip with
28 kills and 22 errors on 114 total attacks. Brinkman and Mobley
were the only two Pioneers in double figures in digs with 12
and 18, respectively. Meredith Fry (Burnet, TX/Burnet
HS) led the team with 16 assists followed by Johanna
Hubbard (Southlake, TX/Carroll HS) with 10.
Next
up, the Pioneers travel to Grand Junction, Colo. to participate
in the Mesa State Tournament. TWU faces Colorado
Christian at 11 a.m. and Mesa State at 7:00 p.m. on Friday,
Sept. 6. Then on Saturday, the team will play Bellarmine at
9:00 a.m. and Wisconsin-Parkside at 3 p.m. to close out
the tournament.
