PIONEERS END JO KUHN LABOR DAY CLASSIC
WITH TWO LOSSES

DENTON, TX--The Texas Woman's University volleyball team (0-4) fought hard, but came up short in their final two matches of the Jo Kuhn Labor Day Classic. The Pioneers dropped two four-game decisions to Texas A&M-Kingsville (25-30, 23-30, 30-28, 22-30) and Chadron State College (25-30, 30-22, 12-30, 18-30). Senior Adalene Wright (Garland, TX/South Garland H.S.) led the team with a total of 19 kills in the two matches.

The Pioneers fell behind two games to none in their match against Lone Star Conference South Division member Texas A&M-Kingsville before their offense started clicking with 19 kills and a .212 hitting percentage in game three. TAMU-K took game four by the score of 22-30 and kept the Pioneers at bay with some good defense. TWU hit at a .110 clip during the match while the Javelinas turned in a .210 hitting percentage. Keslie O'Leary of TAMU-K led both teams with a game-high 19 kills followed by her teammate Trina Ervin with 13. Wright led the Pioneers with 11 kills while Marci Brinkman (Carrollton, TX/Newman Smith H.S.) turned in with 13 digs. TAMU-K had 58 kills and 72 digs compared to the Pioneers 43 kills and 59 digs.

Chadron State took an early lead in the Pioneers final match of the day with a 25-30 win in game one, but TWU roared back and won game two by the score of 30-22 with the help of 11 team kills and a hitting percentage of .171. The difference in the match came during the final two frames as CSC recorded 27 kills on only five errors with an average hitting percentage of .450. CSC had two players in double-figures in kills with Shelly Kraus leading the way with 13 kills. Wright and Brinkman were the leading figures for TWU, both recording eight kills with Wright adding a game-high 15 digs. Each team turned in eight team blocks while CSC led the way with 50 kills and 59 digs.

Next up, the Pioneers host Centenary College on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena. TWU defeated Centenary by the score of 30-25, 30-17, 30-18 last season.
