TEXAS
WOMAN'S UNIVERSITY LEADS PACK OF FOUR INTO USAG WOMEN'S
TEAM FINAL
DENTON, TX2003 USAG Collegiate
National Championship co-host Texas Woman's University opened
the Women's Semifinals
on Thursday night by winning the beam title with a 48.475 and
never looked back, scoring a meet best 194.650 to finish in
first place. Seattle Pacific University came in second with
a 192.675, followed by Temple University in third with a 192.400
and two-time defending national champion Air Force Academy
in fourth with a 192.175. All four of those teams will move
on to the Women's Team Final on Friday, April 18.
The University of California-Davis (191.550), Centenary College
(191.475), Cornell University (190.725) and the University
of Bridgeport (185.675) rounded out the top eight teams in
the semifinal competition. As a team, TWU won the balance beam
and vault (48.650) titles and came in second to Air Force on
floor with a 49.125, compared to the Falcons 49.150. Cornell
won the bars title with a 48.675, followed by Centenary in
second with a 48.525 and the Pioneers in third with a 48.400.
TWU senior Luci
Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry Creek H.S.) won
her first USAG national title in the all-around with a score
of 39.250 after coming in third her freshman and sophomore
seasons. Rounding out the top eight finishers, who earned USAG
All-America status along with Romberg, are; Laura Frank, Air
Force, 39.050, Allison Todd, Air Force, 39.000, Lindsey
Clowers (Garland, TX/South Garland H.S.), Texas Woman's,
38.750, Corrie McDaniel, Seattle Pacific, 38.525, Erin Davis,
Temple, 38.475, Sarah Wesley, Southern Connecticut, 38.250,
and Lynn Schwaebe, UC-Davis, 38.225.
The
top eight finishers on vault, bars, beam and floor earn USAG
All-America honors and will move on to compete in the
Individual Event Finals on Saturday, April 19. Kari Kelly of
Seattle Pacific won the vault with a score of 9.775, followed
by Luci Romberg and Jessica Brozovich (Broomfield, CX/Erie
H.S.) from TWU in a tie for second with a 9.750 and their
teammates Lindsey Clowers and Kim Holland (McKinney, TX/Allen
HS) in a tie for fourth place with a 9.725. Lynn Schwaebe
of UC-Davis, Rachel Anderson of Seattle Pacific and Dana
Giametta (Brookshire, TX/Terry H.S.) of TWU all tied
for sixth place with a score of 9.700. Romberg earned her second
title of the night on bars with a top score of 9.875, followed
by her teammates, Stephanie Loudat (Houston, TX/Cy-Falls
H.S.) and Chelsie Leggett (Centerville, OH/Centerville
H.S.) in a tie for second place with a 9.850. Jennie Jackson
(Centenary, 9.825), Paige Ozaroski (Temple, 9.825), Kristen
Strid (Seattle Pacific, 9.825), Allison Todd (Air Force, 9.800)
and Janelle Thibault (Centenary, 9.800) rounded out the top
eight finishers on bars.
Air Force's Laura Frank and TWU's Stephanie Loudat tied for
the top spot on beam with a 9.825, followed by Erin Davis of
Temple in third with a 9.775. The Pioneers' Luci Romberg tied
with teammate Lindsey Clowers and Temple's Jennifer Beaver
in fourth place with a 9.750 while Shellen Goltz came in seventh
with a 9.725. Allison Todd of Air Force and Paige Ozaroski
of Temple tied for eighth place with a score of 9.700. Three
Pioneers, Romberg, Amber McMeans (Hurst, TX/L.D. Bell
H.S.) and Jonica Scott (Grand Prairie, TX/Bowie H.S.) tied
with Tiffany Chan of UC-Davis for the floor title with a score
of 9.875. Laura Frank and Allison Todd of Air Force, Cicely
Warrington of Temple and Sarah Racioppi of Centenary rounded
out the top eight finishers as they tied for fifth place with
a score of 9.850.
Texas Woman's University led all schools with 16 gymnasts
earning USAG All-America status with Luci Romberg finishing
with a career-high four honors coming on vault, bars, beam
and the all-around. Allison Todd of Air Force tied Romberg
with her four All-America honors coming on bars, beam, floor
and the all-around.
Friday's
schedule at the 2003 USAG Collegiate National Championships
includes the Men's Team Final beginning at 1:00 p.m., followed
by the Women's Team Final at 7 p.m.
COLLEGE
OF WILLIAM AND MARY MEN REPEATS AS VARSITY TEAM CHAMPIONS
Arizona State University
takes the Collegiate Team Championship
DENTON, TXThe College of William
and Mary won their third straight USAG Collegiate National
Championship
with a team score of 210.225. The Tribe had to fend off the
United States Military Academy, who finished second with a
score of 209.600, for most of the meet. William and Mary won
the floor exercise (35.050), parallel bars (34.525) and horizontal
bar (34.875) while the Black Knights took the pommel horse
(34.150), rings (36.000) and vault (36.150).
The Air Force Academy came in third with a 203.800, followed
by Navy in fourth with a 203.175, Springfield in fifth with
a 201.250 and Southern Connecticut State in sixth with 187.375.
Jaime Northrup of William and Mary took home the all-around
national title with a score of 53.325. Jeff Anderson and Aaron
Jackson of Air Force rounded out the top three. Anderson won
the floor exercise with a 8.950 while Northrup took the pommel
horse with a 9.150. Brian Lee of Army had the top score on
rings with a 9.650 while Aaron Jackson scored a 9.200 on vault
to earn the top spot. Dustin Greenhill gave Army their second
event title on the night with a 9.125 on parallel bars. Ramon
Jackson of William and Mary was the high scorer on horizontal
bar with a 8.825.
In the collegiate division, Arizona State won the 2003 national
title with a 198.375, followed by the University of California-Santa
Barbara with a 195.925 in second. The University of Washington
scored a 189.075 and the University of Vermont turned in a
169.200 to round out the top four. Jeff Crockett of Washington
won the all-around with a 52.600, while Donald Mahr of UC-Santa
Barbara and Bryan Rowe of Arizona State tied for second place
with a 50.750.
The 2003 USAG Collegiate National Championships will conclude
on Saturday, April 19 with the Individual Event Finals at 5:00
p.m.
TEXAS
WOMAN'S UNIVERSITY BRINGS NATIONAL TITLE BACK HOME TO DENTON
DENTON, TXTexas Woman's University
started off on floor exercise with a new school record 49.300
and never
looked back, winning their seventh USAG Collegiate National
Championship with a meet-record team score of 195.600. Two-time
defending national champion Air Force came in at a distant
second with a 192.850. Seattle Pacific University recorded
a third place finish with a 192.400 while Temple University
came in fourth with a 191.900. This is the first national title
for the Pioneers since 2000, and the seventh in 11 years under
head coach Frank Kudlac.
The Pioneers started the first rotation with their 49.300
on floor, which was the highest event score on the night. All
six TWU gymnast turned in scores of 9.700 or better with all-around
champion Luci Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry Creek H.S.) pacing
the field with a 9.900. Seattle Pacific recorded the next highest
score on floor with a 49.150. TWU then recorded the highest
vault score on the night in the second rotation when they turned
in a 48.625, with SPU and Air Force tying in the second spot
at 48.225. The Pioneers' Lindsey Clowers (Garland, TX/South
Garland H.S.) led all gymnasts on vault with a 9.825.
Texas
Woman's University didn't let up in the third rotation, recording
a 49.225 on uneven bars to lead all teams. Temple
was the closest to the Pioneers with a 49.050. Erin MacNabb
(Glenwood, MD/Notre Dame Prep.) led TWU and the rest
of the competitors when she tied her career best on bars with
a 9.925. In the final rotation, the Pioneers ended the meet
by taking their fourth event title on the night with a 48.450
on beam. Jessa Liegl helped lead Air Force to a team score
of 47.450 on beam when she turned in a 9.900 to lead all other
gymnasts.
Eighty men and women gymnasts will compete on Saturday, April
19 for individual national titles as the 2003 USA Gymnastics
Collegiate National Championships finishes up with the Event
Finals at 5:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena. TWU will have 16
competitors vying for individual titles on vault, bars, beam
and floor.
TEN INDIVIDUAL
NATIONAL TITLES HANDED OUT IN FINAL DAY OF USAG NATIONAL
CHAMPIONSHIPS
DENTON, TXThe
University of California-Davis women's team and the University
of Washington
men's team were the big winners in the final night of competition
at the 2003 USAG Collegiate National Championships as both
schools walked away with two event titles in the Individual
Event Finals. UC-Davis gymnasts' Lynn Schwaebe and Tiffany
Chan won titles on vault and floor exercise, respectively,
while Washington's Jeff Crockett took titles on floor exercise
and horizontal bar. Championship co-host Texas Woman's University
recorded an individual national title of their own as Stephanie
Loudat (Houston, TX/Cy-Falls H.S.) tied with Seattle
Pacific's Kristen Strid on uneven bars with a 9.850.
Other individual event champions
on the night included; Air Force's Allison Todd on balance
beam
with a score of 9.850, Bryan Rowe of Arizona State winning
the pommel horse with a 9.150; Brian Lee of Army taking the
still rings with a score of 9.600; Air Force's Aaron Jackson
winning the men's vault with a 9.225; and Ramon Jackson of
William & Mary taking the parallel bars title with a
8.825.
Senior
Athlete-of-the-Year awards were handed out to Luci Romberg
(Foxfield, CO/ Cherry Creek H.S.) of Texas Woman's University
for the women's division, Donald Mahr of UC-Santa Barbara
for the men's collegiate
division and Aaron Jackson of Air Force in the men's varsity
division. Andrea McGary of Temple was honored with the Mari-Rae
Soper Award, given to the athlete who has unparalleled passion,
dedication and devotion to the sport of gymnastics. Arizona
State head coach Scott Barclay took home the Men's Collegiate
Coach-of-the-Year award while Cliff Gauthier of William & Mary
won the Men's Varsity Coach-of-the-Year award. Lorrell Tindell
from Seattle Pacific University was awarded the Women's Coach-of-the-Year
and Texas Woman's University's Jackie Fain was voted
as the Women's Assistant Coach-of-the-Year.
