NO. 16 TEXAS A&M-COMMERCE ENDS PIONEERS SEASON

COMMERCE, TX—With the score tied 1-1 after the first period, No. 16 Texas A&M University-Commerce (15-1-3, 7-1-1 LSC) used two second-half goals to hand Texas Woman’s University (3-12-2, 2-6-1 LSC) a 3-1 loss in its season finale. TWU freshman Stephanie McCool (Midlothian, TX/Midlothian HS) scored her first goal of the season in the 13th minute.

"We dominated for pretty much the entire first period. They scored first and then Stephanie McCool answered right back to tie the game. Texas A&M-Commerce was worried because our team was doing a good job of defending their attack for most of the game," head coach Fleur Benatar said. "In the second half, the wind became a factor, but they capitalized on two good opportunities and beat us. We had a few opportunities to tie the game, but nothing found the net. I am real pleased with how this team played today. Even though we lost, we hung with the 16th ranked team in the country and that will give this team confidence for next season."

The Lady Lions came out firing to begin the game, recording two shots in the first four minutes before Tiffany Adams put TAMU-C on the board first when she scored off a throw in with 7:39 on the clock. After the Lady Lions committed two fouls, McCool knotted the game at 1-1 when she received a through ball from Luci Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry Creek H.S.) and scored from 10 yards out. TAMU-C turned in 12 more shots in the first half, but starting goalie Sara Weaver (Prosper, TX/ Prosper H.S.) made three saves to keep the scored tied.

TWU started the second half with two shots in the first 10 minutes coming from Julie Hosek (Keller, TX/Keller H.S.) and Stephanie Richardson (Duncanville, TX/ Duncanville H.S.), but neither one found the back of the net. Adams gave the Lady Lions the lead in the 63rd minute when she broke away from the TWU defense and scored from 15 yards out. TAMU-C kept the offensive pressure on, recording three more shots during the next 13 minutes before Jacette Aguiar scored on a cross from inside the box, giving the Lady Lions a 1-3 lead. Emily Meinen (Keller, TX/Keller H.S.) and Hosek both had good looks at scoring in the game’s final moments, but Meinen’s shot went wide while Hosek’s shot hit the crossbar.

TWU finished the game with 10 shots, three on goal, while TAMU-C recorded 24 shots, eight on goal. Weaver recorded the loss, moving her record to 3-7-0 on the season, by allowing three goals while making five saves. Hosek led the team in shots with three while Mandy Lambert (The Colony, TX/The Colony H.S.) chipped in with two. The fouls were even in the game with both teams recording seven. Each team also had three corner kick opportunities.

The Pioneers finished up the 2003 season with a 3-12-2 mark overall, 2-6-1 in conference play. They registered the program’s first ever win over a ranked opponent when they beat No. 18 Central Oklahoma 1-0 in Edmond, Oklahoma on Oct. 25. Romberg finished with a team-high 11 points and three assists and tied with Meinen for the most goals scored with four. Hosek totaled the most shots in 2003 with 44 while Stephanie Stein (Trophy Club, TX/Northwest H.S.) had the Pioneers best shooting percentage at a .231 with three goals on 13 shots.
