SOUTHERN
UTAH DOWNS PIONEERS IN HOME FINALE
DENTON,
TX—Southern
Utah (2-16) scored three second-half goals to down Texas
Woman’s
University (3-11-2), 3-1, in the Pioneers final home game
of the 2003 season. Sophomore Melissa Scott (Denton,
TX/Denton H.S.) scored her first goal of the season
in the 44th minute.
"The team played well today and we had our chances to win. Natalie Reyes
and Stephanie McCool had some great looks at the goal, but nothing got through," head
coach Fleur Benatar said. "The defense played well and blocked some good
shots, they just had a couple of break downs that allowed Southern Utah to win
the game. We will just have to rebound and finish out the season on a good note
against Texas A&M-Commerce on Wednesday."
Both
teams started the game rather slow as neither team recorded
a shot 12 minutes into the game. Natalie Reyes (Arlington,
TX/Lamar HS) got
the TWU offense rolling when she had two shots from within 15 yards that
were both saved by the Thunderbirds goalie, Lyndsey Sobrero. After that
point, both teams started attacking the goal, with the Pioneers and SUU
both turning in six shots in the period. Scott gave TWU the lead a minute
before half when she scored from inside the box on the right side off a
cross from Luci Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry Creek HS). Sara
Weaver (Prosper, TX/Prosper HS) started in goal for the Pioneers
and made three saves before Stephanie Stein (Trophy Club, TX/Northwest
HS) replaced her at halftime.
Stephanie
McCool (Midlothian, TX/Midlothian H.S.) started
the second half with two quick shots, one that went high
and the other missing wide left. The Thunderbirds took
the goal kick after McCool’s second miss and went
down the field to knot the game up at 1-1. Dani Lavigne
scored in the 52nd minute on a 10-yard shot from the right
wing. Both teams recorded eight shots during the next 25
minutes, but nothing got in the net. At the 79:04 mark,
Lavigne delivered the game winner when she directed a shot
that bounced off the crossbar from teammate, Amber Tubbs,
and pushed it past Stein. Nine minutes later, Sarah Sillitoe
iced the game for SUU when she scored on a free kick from
25 yards out.
TWU
finished the game with 15 shots, six on goal, while SUU recorded
14 shots, 11 on goal. Stein recorded the loss and moved her
record to 0-6-2 with
five saves and three goals allowed. The Pioneers were flagged with 13 fouls
and two offside penalties while SUU was called offside four times and had
10 fouls. McCool and Julie Hosek (Keller, TX/Keller H.S.) led
the Pioneers with four shots apiece while Reyes finished with three shots,
two on goal.
Up
next, the Pioneers hit the road for their final game of the
2003 season. They will travel to Commerce, Texas on Wednesday,
Oct. 29 to take on Texas
A&M-Commerce at 3 p.m.
