UPSET #18 CENTRAL OKLAHOMA IN SOCCER
EDMOND,
Okla.—Texas Woman’s University
(3-10-2, 2-5-1 conf.) scored their only goal of the game
in the 53rd minute and held on for a 1-0 upset victory
over 18th- ranked Central Oklahoma (13-2-2, 6-1 LSC).
The win snapped a school record 13-game winning streak
by the Bronchos.
"The team played okay and we had our chances to score in the first half,
but both teams were struggling. After Natalie Reyes scored her goal, UCO was
mad and they started hammering our defense," head coach Fleur Benatar said. "Sara
Weaver and the entire defense did a great job of denying all of their shots.
Julie Hosek made an incredible play late in the game to save a sure goal and
we held on for the win. This was not the prettiest game, but our entire team
played with a lot of heart today."
Neither
team was very productive in the first half of play as both
teams totaled four shots. Starting goalkeeper Sara
Weaver (Prosper, TX/Prosper H.S.) saw three shots
come her way, but did not have to make a save while her counterpart,
Melissa Penn of UCO recorded one save. Both
teams went into the half tied a 0-0. It took the Pioneers a little over
seven minutes to take the lead in the second period. Stephanie
Richardson (Duncanville, TX/Duncanville H.S.) sent a ball to Natalie
Reyes (Arlington, TX/Lamar H.S.) through the Bronchos defense.
Reyes eluded one defender and pushed the ball into the net for her second
goal of the season.
UCO
turned up the pressure in the second half, recording 11 shots
with five on goal. Julie Hosek (Keller, TX/Keller
H.S.) made a
great save in the 83rd minute when she knocked the ball away just before
it went into the net after Weaver came out to meet UCO's Melissa Terry,
who kicked it by her for what looked like a certain goal. Weaver earned
the 1-0 win as she finished the game with five saves, all coming in the
second half.
TWU
finished the game with three shots, all three on goal, while
the Bronchos recorded 14 shots, five on goal. Stephanie
McCool (Midlothian, TX/Midlothian HS) and Hosek
joined Reyes as the only Pioneers to record a shot in the
game. TWU was flagged with 15 fouls and had one
corner kick while UCO had nine fouls, seven corners and were caught offside
eight times.
Up
next, the Pioneers return home to host Division I Southern
Utah for the last home game of the 2003 season
on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m.
on TWU Soccer Field. It will be Senior Appreciation Day as TWU says goodbye
to their lone senior, Luci Romberg.
