PIONEERS FALL 2-1 TO EAST CENTRAL IN SOCCER

DENTON, TX— Texas Woman’s University (2-10-2, 1-5-1 LSC) controlled the ball on their half of the field for most of the game, but East Central (5-8-1, 2-3-0 LSC) got two scores, one in each half, and held on for the 1-2 victory. The Pioneers out-shot the Tigers, 16 to 14.

"You have to have some luck in soccer and we have not had any. My players have been hurt and sick, but we still manage to out shoot our opponents. We just haven’t been able to score because we hit posts, hit players and give it straight to the goalkeeper," head coach Fleur Benatar said. "It is just frustrating because most of the goals that have been scored on us have been flukes, with minor mistakes in our defense. We should be the ones winning these games and we are not."

For the second straight game, TWU was the aggressor in the early going as Emily Meinen (Keller, TX/Keller H.S.) and Luci Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry Creek H.S.) both had two shots on goal in the game’s first seven minutes with all four missing their mark. Both teams made a lot of substitutions in the first half as the players were dealing with unseasonably warm temperatures at TWU Soccer Field. ECU got on the board first when Jessie Shertzer stole the ball from a TWU defender and took it the other way, scoring from 15-yards out in the 38th minute. That was the only score starting goalie Sara Weaver (Prosper, TX/Prosper H.S.) allowed in the first half as she finished with two saves on six shots faced. The Pioneers had eight shots in the first frame, six on goal.

After intermission, TWU began their attack again. Mandy Lambert (The Colony, TX/ The Colony H.S.) had two good looks from inside the box during the first five minutes of play, but Tiger defenders blocked both. ECU got the ball on their side of the field midway through the period and put pressure on Stephanie Stein (Trophy Club, TX/ Northwest H.S.), who replaced Weaver in goal to start the second period. Semah Yekzaman gave the Tigers a 0-2 advantage in the 74th minute when she scored from inside the box on a ball that got away from Stein on a previous shot. Roughly six minutes later, ECU was called for a handball foul inside the TWU penalty area. Romberg closed the gap to 1-2 when she converted on her penalty kick. Erica Butler (Burleson, TX/Burleson H.S.) and Julie Hosek (Keller, TX/Keller H.S.) had two more shots in the final nine minutes of play, but ECU goalkeeper Melissa Carter made two saves to win the game for the Tigers.

TWU finished the game with 16 shots, seven on goal, while ECU recorded 14 shots, nine on goal. Meinen lead the Pioneers with four shots on the day while Lambert and Hosek each chipped in with three. Romberg’s goal gave her four for the season, tied for the team lead with Meinen. ECU was flagged with 13 fouls and had two corner kicks while TWU recorded 11 fouls and three corner kicks.

Up next, the Pioneers have a week off before they travel to Edmond, Okla. to face the 23rd ranked team in the country, the University of Central Oklahoma. The game is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. UCO has won a school record 11 straight games heading into the conference match.
