NORTHEASTERN
STATE COMES FROM BEHIND TO BEAT TWU
DENTON,
TX— Texas Woman’s
University (2-9-2, 1-4-1 LSC) kept Northeastern State
(10-2-0, 3-1-0 LSC) scoreless through the
first 45 minutes of play, but the Lady Reds scored three
goals late in the second half to push past the Pioneers
1-3. Emily Meinen (Keller, TX/Keller H.S.) put
TWU on the board first when she scored her team-leading
fourth goal of the season 16 minutes into the game.
"I thought the team played really well in the first half and we had a lot
of opportunities to win the game in the second period, but fatigue became an
issue and we could not answer Northeastern State back," head coach Fleur
Benatar said. "We had a lot of players that took some good shots in the
second half, but nothing found the back of the net. Our defense broke down a
couple times and that allowed Northeastern to win the game."
TWU
came out firing from the start, keeping the ball on the NSU
side of the field and recording four shots in the game first
seven minutes. After the
Pioneers were flagged for two offside penalties, Meinen put TWU on the
board when she directed a cross from Breann Morris (Waxahachie,
TX/Waxahachie H.S.) into the goal from five yards out. The Pioneers
kept the pressure on throughout the first period, recording a total of
nine shots. Meinen and Erica Butler (Burleson, TX/Burleson H.S.) both
made a couple of shots late in the period that were saved by the Lady Reds’ goalkeeper,
Tristan Smith.
In
the second half, NSU became the aggressor as the Lady Reds
poured on three shots in the first four minutes. The Pioneers
responded with some offense
of their own as Jackie Leka (Carrollton, TX/Warner Southern College), Luci
Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry Creek H.S.) and Meinen each had
some good chances to score, but Smith made three saves to keep the score
at 1-0. NSU tied the score with 69:12 showing on the clock when Lisa Wood’s
corner kick went through TWU goalkeeper Sara Weaver’s (Prosper,
TX/Prosper H.S.) hands. Roughly 12 minutes later, Charlotte
Dinsdale gave NSU the lead when she took a pass from Deborah Brereton and
broke away from the TWU defense, scoring 10 yards out. Dinsdale was not
finished as she pushed the Lady Red lead to 1-3 when scored on another
breakaway from 20 yards out.
TWU
finished the game with 16 shots, eight on goal, while NSU
recorded 12 shots, seven on goal. Smith earned the victory
by making seven saves and allowing
one goal. Weaver moved her record to 2-5 on the season with the loss as
she made four saves and allowed three goals. Both teams were flagged with
11 fouls apiece while the Pioneers were caught offside six times to NSU’s
three.
Up
next, the Pioneers host another conference opponent in East
Central on Sunday, Oct. 19, starting at 2 p.m.
