PIONEERS RECORD FIRST CONFERENCE VICTORY IN PROGRAM’S SHORT HISTORY

WEATHERFORD, OK—Freshman forward Emily Meinen (Keller, TX/Keller H.S.) headed the winning score into the goal seven minutes into the first overtime, giving Texas Woman’s University (2-8-2, 1-3-1 LSC) a 2-1 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma (2-11-2, 0-4-0 LSC). The win ended a seven-game losing streak and gave the Pioneers their first Lone Star Conference victory in the program’s two-year history.

"We clearly dominated the first half of play, but they made some adjustments at halftime and outplayed us in the second period. The second half and overtime was a real battle because their fans were getting involved and Southwestern played a lot better," head coach Fleur Benatar said. "I changed the lineup around to get my players motivated and I guess it worked. It feels good to win our first conference game and hopefully we can build some momentum heading into the last part of our season."

Luci Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry Creek H.S.) put the Pioneers on the board first in the 15th minute when she directed a corner kick from Jackie Leka (Carrollton, TX/Warner Southern College) into the goal. Starting goalkeeper Sara Weaver (Prosper, TX/Prosper H.S.) kept the Lady Bulldogs off the board for the remainder of the first half by making seven saves on nine shots faced. In the second period, TWU actually out-shot SWOSU six to three, but Katherine DeWitt knotted the game up at 1-1 in the 67th minute with her second goal of the season.

Weaver made one more save in the period to send the game into overtime. Playing in their fourth overtime game of the season, the Pioneers poured on the pressure with four shots while the defense kept the Lady Bulldogs from ever pulling the trigger. Meinen scored her first game-winning goal of the season in the 97th minute when she headed the ball into the goal off a free kick from Julie Hosek (Keller, TX/Keller H.S.).

TWU totaled 18 shots in the game, 14 on goal, while SWOSU turned in 12. Weaver recorded her second win of the season with the 2-1 victory, moving her record to 2-4. She finished with eight saves and one goal allowed from nine shots faced. Hosek led the team with five shots during the contest, all five on goal. Romberg and Meinen both finished with two points apiece and two shots to go along with their two goals. The Pioneers were flagged for a season-low eight fouls and recorded four corner kicks.

Collette Parker (Denton, TX/Denton H.S.), Erica Butler (Burleson, TX/Burleson H.S.) and Leka all had two shots apiece while Lacey Steinkamp (Sugarland, TX/ Clements H.S.), Mandy Lambert (The Colony, TX/The Colony H.S.) and Stephanie Richardson (Duncanville, TX/Duncanville H.S.) each recorded one shot.

Up next, the Pioneers return home on Friday and Sunday as they host Northeastern State at 2:00 p.m. on Oct. 17 and East Central at 2:00 p.m. on Oct. 19.
