ANGELO STATE DROPS PIONEERS 0-3 IN SOCCER

SAN ANGELO, Tex.—Angelo State (7-6-0, 1-2-0) scored three goals in the first half and staved off three scoring opportunities by TWU (1-8-2, 0-3-1) in the second period to win the game, 3-0. The Pioneers totaled just five shots during the game with two coming from Emily Meinen (Keller, TX/Keller HS).

"The team played better today, but Angelo State scored on a couple of break-aways and we could not answer back," head coach Fleur Benatar said. "We shut them down in the second half and had a couple of good opportunities to score, but nothing went through. This game was a lot closer than the score showed."

The Rambelles poured the pressure on TWU in the first half with starting goalkeeper Stephanie Stein (Trophy Club, TX/Northwest H.S.) facing 12 shots. Shana Brown put ASU on the board in the 27th minute when she scored on a through pass from Whitney Coberly. Roughly eight minutes later, Erica McNutt gave the Rambelles a 0-2 lead when she scored from a lob pass from Ashley Brezovsky. ASU was not done as Laura Cannon scored in the 41st minute, giving them a commanding 0-3 lead going into intermission. Stein recorded the loss, moving her record to 0-4-2 on the season with five saves and three goals allowed.

TWU recorded three shots in the second period, but none of them found the back of the net. Sara Weaver (Prosper, TX/Prosper H.S.) came in to replace Stein in goal in the second half, shutting out ASU with one save on six shots faced. The Pioneers were flagged with 15 fouls and had one corner kick opportunity.

Up next, the Pioneers travel to Weatherford, Okla. to face Southwestern Oklahoma on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 4 p.m. They return home on Friday and Sunday as they host Northeastern State at 2 p.m. on Oct. 17 and East Central at 2 p.m. on Oct. 19.
