MIDWESTERN STATE GIVES TWU SECOND LOSS IN CONFERENCE

WICHITA FALLS, Tex.—Midwestern State (7-4-0, 1-1-0) scored three goals in the first half and four more in the second period to hand Texas Woman’s University (1-7-2, 0-2-1 LSC) a 7-1 loss in conference play. Freshman Emily Meinen (Keller, TX/ Keller H.S.) scored the Pioneers only goal of the game in the 56th minute.

"The team came out flat and didn’t communicate on the field. It is frustrating because I know how well this team can play if they play as a team and today, we just had a few players who gave it their best," head coach Fleur Benatar said. "We were in the game, we just had too many break downs on the field. It seemed like every time Midwestern State took a shot, the ball went into the goal."

It did not take the Lady Indians very long to get on the board in their game against TWU as Dayna Sanders scored an unassisted goal seven minutes into the contest. The Pioneer defense allowed MSU just four more shots in the first half, but they scored on two of those to make the score 0-3 going into intermission. Starting goalkeeper Stephanie Stein (Trophy Club, TX/Northwest HS) made one save in the first period and another in the second before Sara Weaver (Prosper, TX/ Prosper HS) replaced her in goal. Stein allowed four goals to record the loss, moving her record to 0-3-2 on the season.

MSU kept the pressure on in the second period, recording 14 shots. The Lady Indians added to their lead when Natalie Noblitt scored in the 48th minute. Angela Darrough moved the score to 0-5 before the Pioneers got on the board with Meinen’s goal. MSU added two more goals to close out the game with the final score coming from Nickie Zelnik in the 87th minute.

The Pioneers recorded 10 shots in the game, seven coming in the second half. Meinen and Julie Hosek (Keller, TX/Keller HS) led the squad with three shots apiece. Stephanie McCool (Midlothian, TX/Midlothian HS), Luci Romberg (Foxfield, CO/ Cherry Creek HS), Mandy Lambert (The Colony, TX/The Colony HS) and Collette Parker (Denton, TX/Denton HS) each chipped in with a shot. Weaver closed the game out with four saves and three goals allowed.

Up next, the Pioneers continue their road trip as they travel to San Angelo on Saturday, Oct. 11 for a 3:00 p.m. game with the Rambelles.
