TWU AND WEST TEXAS A&M BATTLE TO A TIE IN SOCCER

DENTON, TX—Texas Woman’s University (1-6-2, 0-1-1 LSC) played in their second consecutive overtime game and third of the season, but this time a winner could not be decided as they tied conference rival West Texas A&M (5-3-1, 1-1-1), 1-1, after two overtimes.

"This game was a complete turnaround from last year because West Texas beat us 9-1 at their house. It was a very physical game and our team played great throughout. They were winning balls in the air and the defense stalled a lot of their offensive opportunities," head coach Fleur Benatar said. "We matched West Texas’ intensity today, and I think that was the difference. I am very happy with the tie because this is a good team."

West Texas A&M controlled the ball for much of the first half. They recorded nine shots in the period, five on goal, to TWU’s two shots. Sarit Shenar put the Lady Buffs on the board first in the 21st minute when she scored on a breakaway 10 yards out with an assist from Roxy Sides. WTAM kept the pressure on to close out the period, but starting goalkeeper Stephanie Stein (Trophy Club, TX/Northwest H.S.) made five saves to keep the score 0-1.

The TWU defense stepped up in the second half and allowed the Lady Buffs just three shots. Julie Hosek (Keller, TX/Keller H.S.) knotted the game at 1-1 when scored her first goal of the season off a free kick from 40 yards out in the 80th minute. Stein made two more saves in the second half to push the game into overtime. In the first extra period, the Pioneers had a good chance to win the game when Hosek sent a free kick into the goal, which passed through the Lady Buffs’ goalkeeper’s hands and was cleared by a defender. WTAM turned in five more shots during both overtimes and TWU added two more, but none of them found the back of the net and the game ended in a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of play.

The Pioneers recorded nine shots in the game with Hosek leading the way with four and one goal scored. Mandy Lambert (The Colony, Tex./The Colony H.S.) added two shots with Natalie Reyes (Arlington, Tex./Lamar H.S.), Breann Morris (Waxahachie, Tex./Waxahachie H.S.) and Emily Meinen (Keller, Tex./Keller H.S.) each chipping in with one apiece. Stein finished the game with a season-high eight saves and moved her record to 0-2-2 with the tie.

Up next, the Pioneers hit the road for two more games against conference opponents. First, TWU plays Midwestern State University on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 6:00 p.m. in Wichita Falls, then they travel to San Angelo on Saturday, Oct. 11 for a 3:00 p.m. game with the Rambelles.
