EASTERN NEW MEXICO DOWNS TWU TO OPEN CONFERENCE

DENTON, TX—Texas Woman’s University (1-6-1, 0-1 LSC) and Eastern New Mexico (2-4, 1-0 LSC) could not decide on a winner after 90 minutes of play, so they went into sudden-death overtime. The Zias’ Megan Dozier broke the 1-1 tie at the 6:55 mark to give ENMU a 2-1 victory. The Pioneers controlled the ball for most of the game, recording 31 shots to the Zias' six, but only one shot made it into the goal.

TWU was firing the ball at ENMU goalkeeper, Carolyn Vincent, from the very start. They recorded 14 shots in the first half, five on goal. Dozier put the Zias on the board first when she received a pass from Kayla McKamey, then broke away from a TWU defender and scored at the 22:18 mark. Dozier had both of ENMU’s shots in the first period.

The Pioneers again put pressure on the ENMU defense in the second half, recording 15 shots to the Zias three. Stephanie Stein (Trophy Club, TX/Northwest H.S.) knotted the game at 1-1 with 74:13 on the clock when she scored off of a shot from her teammate, Julie Hosek (Keller, TX/Keller H.S.), which bounced off of Vincent’s hands. The Pioneers continued to take shots at the goal, but Vincent made six saves in the period to move the game into overtime. In the extra period, TWU had two good opportunities to score early, but one shot sailed over the goal and Vincent saved the other. Almost seven minutes went by when Dozier scored the game-winner off an assist from Stacia Givens.

This was the Pioneers second overtime game of the season and first loss in an overtime period. Sara Weaver (Prosper, TX/Prosper H.S.) saw only six shots come her way during the game and made one save. She moved her record to 1-4 on the season with the loss. Stein recorded her third goal of the season while Hosek led the team with six shots. Twelve different Pioneers recorded shots in the game.

Up next, the Pioneers host West Texas A&M University on Sunday, Oct. 5 at Pioneer Soccer Field with a start time of 12:00 p.m.
