PIONEERS DROP THIRD STRAIGHT IN SOCCER

SAN ANTONIO, TX—Texas Woman’s University (1-5-1) held St. Mary’s (3-5) scoreless through 75 minutes of play, but Kelly Felts broke the tie in the 76th minute with one of her two goals and led the Rattlers to a 2-0 win over the Pioneers.

"The team played a lot better today than they had in a couple of weeks. We actually dominated the game and played very physical, but our shots didn’t find the goal," head coach Fleur Benatar said. "Everybody played pretty well, we just lost the game. St. Mary’s got two goals late in the game and we could not answer back. We had a tough time getting through their defense."

St. Mary’s and TWU went scoreless in the first half of play, thanks to some great defense by both teams. The Rattlers recorded seven shots in the first frame, but Sara Weaver (Prosper, TX/Prosper H.S.) made two saves to keep the score knotted at 0-0. The Pioneers offense finally got rolling in the second period as Stephanie McCool (Midlothian, TX/Midlothian H.S.) turned in three shots, one on goal, but the St. Mary’s goalkeeper, Jennifer O’Connor, made her only save of the game and kept TWU off the board. Felts broke the tie when she scored in the 76th minute on an assist from Natalie Moore. Twelve and a half minutes later, Felts answered with her second goal of the game at the 88:30 mark and the Rattlers held on for the win.

TWU totaled four shots in the game with the other coming from Julie Hosek (Keller, TX/Keller H.S.). The Pioneers held St. Mary’s to just four shots in the second half, but two got through for scores. Weaver moved her record to 1-3 on the season after the loss, but made three saves. The Pioneers were flagged for 19 fouls and did not record a corner kick.

Up next, the Pioneers open up Lone Star Conference play at home on Friday, Oct. 3 as they host conference newcomer Eastern New Mexico at 2:00 p.m. Then on Sunday, Oct. 5, they face West Texas A&M at 12:00 p.m. at Pioneer Soccer Field.
