EDWARD’S DROPS PIONEERS, 4-2, IN SOCCER
AUSTIN,
Tex.—St. Edward’s
(7-2) scored two goals in the first half and held Texas
Woman’s University (1-4-1) to only three shots in
the period, which proved to be the difference as the Hilltoppers
held on for a 4-2 victory. The Pioneers scored two goals
off of just four shots in the second half, but it was not
enough.
It
took St. Edward’s just 14 minutes to take a 0-1 lead
in the game when Monica Hernandez scored with an assist from
Ryan LaPointe. TWU’s starting
goalkeeper Sara Weaver (Prosper, TX/Prosper H.S.) made two
saves on seven shots in the first half, but allowed her second goal of the
game with 41:53 showing on the clock, an unassisted shot from Amy Walker.
The
Hilltoppers added to their lead 24 seconds into the second
period when Cassandra Chapa scored with an assist from Walker. Luci
Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry Creek H.S.) finally
put the Pioneers on the board when she scored her second
goal of the season in the 59th minute.
Chapa gave St. Edward’s a commanding 1-4 lead just five minutes later
when she chipped in with her second goal of the day. Erica Butler
(Burleson, TX/Burleson H.S.) closed the gap to 2-4 when she
notched her second goal of the season with 82:56 showing on the clock,
but the clock ran out on the Pioneers chances for a comeback.
Weaver
picked up her second loss of the season, moving her record
to 1-2 after allowing four goals and making four saves. Seven
different Pioneers registered
shots during the game with Stephanie McCool (Midlothian, Tex./Midlothian
H.S.) and Natalie Reyes (Arlington, Tex./Lamar H.S.) joining
Romberg and Butler as the only players with shots on goal. LaPointe and
Chapa paced St. Edward’s with five shots apiece.
Up
next, the Pioneers continue their road trip as they travel
south to San Antonio, Texas to face St. Mary’s University
at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28.
