INCARNATE
WORD TOO MUCH FOR PIONEERS IN SOCCER
DENTON, TX—With
the game tied 1-1 at intermission, Incarnate Word (4-2-2)
used two second half goals to defeat Texas Woman’s
University (1-3-1) 1-3 at Pioneer Field. TWU’s lone
score came from Natalie Reyes (Arlington, TX/Lamar
H.S.), her first collegiate goal.
"I
feel like the game could have gone either way after halftime,
we were just a little too tired. Our defense broke down a
couple of times and Incarnate
Word capitalized with two goals to win the game," head coach Fleur
Benatar said. "The team played hard, they just couldn’t
put all the pieces together in the second period. Julie Hosek played a great
defensive game for
us and Natalie Reyes came off the bench and gave our front line some help."
From
the opening kick, Incarnate Word controlled the ball for
most of the first half. The Crusaders recorded 13 shots,
seven on goal, and were flagged
five times for being offside. UIW took the lead at the 24:19 mark when
Julia Garcia got free on a break away and scored on a 15-yard shot in front
of the goal. The Pioneers fought back to tie the game when Reyes connected
on her goal from 20 yards out at the 42:45 mark.
In
the second half, TWU put some more pressure on the Crusader
defense, recording five shots, four on goal, but none found
their way into the net. UIW broke
the tie at the 53:52 mark when Garcia added her second goal of the game.
Roughly eight minutes later, Jaime Gunthorp put the Crusaders up by two
when her shot from 15 yards out found the back of the net. The Pioneers
had some good shots late in the game, but the UIW goalkeeper, Missy Howard,
made four saves to preserve the victory.
Seven
different Pioneers recorded shots during the game with Julie
Hosek (Keller, TX/Keller H.S.) leading the way with two. Sara
Weaver (Prosper, TX/Prosper H.S.) recorded her first loss of the
season as she allowed three goals, but made 11 saves. TWU finished the game
with eight shots and two corner kick opportunities.
Up
next, the Pioneers hit the road as they travel to Austin,
Tex. on Friday, Sept. 26 to face St. Edward’s University
at 4:00 p.m. Then on Sunday, TWU plays St. Mary’s University
at 3:00 p.m. in San Antonio.
